After latest update, game and expansion won't run

I've been happily playing GalCivII and the expansion beta on my desktop and laptop computers. Since the latest updates, neither the core game nor the expansion will run on my laptop, but both work perfectly on my desktop computer.

On starting the game, I get the generic windows error message:
"GC2Launch.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."

Since the program never even runs, no debug.err file is generated.

Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Try running the game directly (galciv2.exe) rather than via the launcher (not sure what could have gone wrong with the launcher, but it's not neccessary to use it anyway).

Having the same issue. I just upgraded to a BFG 8800GTS video card. I still
can play GC1 ... ?

I shouldn't be so hasty. The original game now runs, but the expansion crashes, this time generating a proper error:

Have you tried it with the game resolution set to your desktop resolution of 1280x800?

And sometimes it works better to set Fullscreen to 0.

You will have to edit Prefs.ini to get that resolution, though.
It is located in C:\My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2, and can be opened with Notepad.

You would set:

[Video]
DisplayWidth=1280
DisplayHeight=800
ColorDepth=32

And possibly:
Fullscreen=0

Wrong debug--DA has its own copy in the DarkAvatar folder, check the one there and post it so we can see what's up.

If that's the case, then this crash didn't generate any debug.err. However, the debug.err file I posted was created at the time/date that the crash occurred. I don't know where it came from.

The video changes in Prefs.ini didn't fix this problem.

I'll play around with drivers. Windows claims it can't find an update, but I'll search manually.

As I said, this crash now occurs only with the expansion, and only since the most recent beta.

It's generally best to not trust Windows's driver-checking abilities. Check the manufacturer's site, and if you can't find anything there, do a search for your chipset's name and "driver" on google.

If that's the case, then this crash didn't generate any debug.err.


Crashes don't generate debug.err files--the game creates one every time it is started and writes to it constantly as it runs. DA should have its own debug.err located at C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar if you ran and crashed the DA executable located there. The only instance that no debug.err will be generated is if the game doesn't run at all, period, and doesn't even get as far as the DX hardware report.

I found the debug.err file on my desktop instead of the folder you specified. It looks like the game couldn't find any of the data files, and on closer inspection, the shortcut it generated was pointing to the wrong folder. I fixed this, and so far things seem to be running. It looks like this was a clerical kind of bug (first the broken launcher, now the misdirected files).
