Do the AIs ever decommission starbases to avoid war ?

In my current game, I was lining up to attack the thalians. They had 2 military resources, and both of which I parked a stack of constructors and battleships next too.

Meanwhile I was manuveuring the rest of my ships to prepare for war and I noticed that one of the starbases was suddenly vacant. I looked to see if someone had destroyed it, and no-one was at war with them. I haven't got the pirate event, nor have I seen any. So what happened to the starbase ?

I've seen this a few times, but this time I'm certain that it wasn't attacked. So they must have demolished it. I think I'd have more respect for the AI if rather than doing this, it sold it to me or another AI. Which makes me wonder if it's a bug. Has anyone else seen this ?

I see it all the time. Exactly as you said. No pirates, no war. Poof they disappear.

Happened on DL at tough twice to me in my last game. I was at war with the Drath and, after taking two planets, one of their resource bases inexplicably disappeared. There was no "avoidance" involved. I have no idea why the AI would conclude that a relatively well protected resource should go in the middle of a war. While all the resource types are important, getting rid of a morale base seems really stupid.

maybe it is somthing as simple as a forced disbandment due to lack of money?

Bases don't have maintenance cost, do they? The only time I ever checked was on influence bases after flipping. 0BC meant I left them alone.

Only drawback on leaving bases around as far as I've seen is that it pushes the price for making new ones.

May be by decommissioning, they save money on all their other ships ? (guessing it's proportional to stats, but not sure)

I'm really thinking it's a bug since they're are not a lot of folks adding to this thread.

Wheel & Fuels, how well does GC2 run on your PCs ? I know at gigantic/obscene my computer is crawling at mid/late game. Maybe there's a memory problem causing this ?

Because I destroy civilizations as I gain a slight edge, the map never gets ridiculously cluttered with ships. I have run into minor issues involving the game getting sluggish in the late phases but never a crash.

I have an Athlon64 2800 CPU on an Asus KV8 motherboard with 1GB RAM and an ATI Radeon 9800 with 128 MB RAM.

GC2 runs great. What kind of system are you running?

I've seen this on numerous occasions, where the AI will destroy their resource SBs for no reason. No war nearby, everything peaceful and boom, they're gone. Usually seems to happen mid to late game.

Pentium 4 running at 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, & GeForce 6600 with 256 MB Ram. (mine doesn't crash either, but gets slow)

Maybe we'll get an answer from the Frog if we keep bumping this...

I thought they did, at least in Galciv1 they did, but do starbases have maintenance costs in Galciv2?

I read on here before that eco/mil/inf bases have like a ten bc maintenance cost, but I'm unsure of the mining bases.

I geuss we'll never know since the devs probably don't believe there is anything wrong. "oh they must be mistaken, a minor civ must have blown it up".

The next time I see this, I'm going to try a go back to see if it's repeatable from the autosave. Maybe if we can send them an instance of this, then we'll get an answer.

Not when the minors are dead and there's nobody capable of reaching said base except me.

I checked out the resource base maintenance from my last game. I had 30 bases of mostly resource and trade with a few influence units. Maintenance cost for every single one is an ABSOLUTE ZERO.

The AI tends to play within its means. Unless you attempt a Trojan Horse gambit by flooding them with worthless ships, the AI will readjust to avoid going in the red.

Bottom line: AI self-destruction of bases is a nasty bug. Somebody will figure out how to exploit it.

Ya I agree. Next game I play I'm going to surround a few resource bases so that I know that they can't be attacked. (unless there is an attack bug that would let someone attack through. Which may happen since I've seen AI ships attack me from 8 or 9 squares away, but I've always thought it was a display issue)

I hope a few of you do the same, and when you see it save off your autosave & send it in. (if it's repeatable.)

If they are decommissioning starbases, how is that not a bug ? Out of all the things to decommission, a resource makes absolutely no sense. The only valid reason would be to avoid war, but even that is questionable. I wouldn't even allow the AI to do it. It makes no sense to tear one down. At least sell it for money.

No, but with a few more inane comments like that, we'll start calling you a troll.

The AI is running a check that results in decommissioning a base that gives it important bonuses and doesn't cost any money to maintain. That's not an "inefficiency." That is a serious bug.
