My opinion is that the AltMeta depreciation should bottom-out at a small value, such as 10-20%, so that people & empires don't completely disappear, but it still allows new players/empires to rise in the rankings.
This was actully discussed quite a bit. There are the All Time categories that keep track of this but for the regular ranking we did discuss retaining 5% but since submitting a single new score gives you 20 times the benefit it was considered why bother. Also the AltMeta isn't a replacement for the offical MV it really just adds to it.
The official MV has folks far above you that haven't played in over a year. The AltMeta is really a far more accurate representation of who is playing now, not who used to play (except the all time categories)
I don't feel like I should be in the number three spot, so from a very individual perspective, the scoring system seems like it's maybe a little bit off.
Not necessarily true. Another part of the offical MV is that it penalizes those that play many small games versus fewer but higher scoring games. Again on the basis that the AltMeta is an enhancement to and not a replacement for the official MV, we felt that we should remove this penalty.
One thing about the AltMeta is that you can rise very quickly, far quicker than the official MV, if you play a lot of games, but at the same time you can fall very quickly if you stop playing games.
I think it's good to have both of these although between the two I think the AltMeta gives you more features with it's graphing ability and is fairer. Particularly in recognizing folks that prefer to play the smaller games or lower scoring victory types that otherwise get overshadowed in the official MV.
BTW we will be working on adding our Metaverse League games to the AltMeta in some kind of yet to be defined pretty display.
