I'm new to Galciv II (although I've played Galciv I, Civ3, and Civ4), having finally purchased it recently after lurking around these forums since before it was released. I've learned a lot from other people's posts, the GalCiv-wiki, and from past experience with other strategy games. I've restarted several games (playing with 1.31), but right now I'm actually sticking to one, playing as the Terrans on a med-sized galaxy with abundant stars, occasional planets, abundant habitable planets, scattered stars, abundant anomalies, very slow tech rate, no tech trading, intensive CPU algorithms for AI, near-default racial abilities, and all nine AI's set to Intelligent. So far this has proven to be the most enjoyable setup (I have more fun when I'm faced with a great challenge), although I'm barely a couple years into the game (not enough free time for games anymore!). I like the fact that each civ only has a handful of planets, which I hope will encourage more conflict and ultimately more fun. I've also read that the tech settings that I'm using will provide for more tech-diverse opponents, and longer-lasting enjoyment from each specific tech effect(s). Just as most fans of this game, I am truly impressed with the support of the devs to what seems like one of the better strategy games out now (I've struggled finding a strategy game that really captivates and immerses me. The last true addiction I had was with Starcraft years ago, but that was an RTS... I prefer TBS now). I wish all developers supported their games with the same attention to detail, commitment, and passion that Stardock exhibits. I eagerly await for DA, mostly because of the new gameplay features (more planetary distinctions for colonization, expanded espionage, asteroids, improvements to the AI), and hope that it will only be one several expansion packs before GalCiv III. And just like the minority, I too hope for a multiplayer expansion... I know of two people that would play with me if it was an option. But on the other hand, I greatly appreciate the attention that Frogboy gives to the AI (much more fun, challenging, and realistic than any other strategy-game AI that I've ever seen), since most of the time I only have time to play for an hour or so and I like to take my sweet time making strategic decisions. My only complaint with the game is that at times it seems a bit "cartoon-ish." I believe that gameplay should definitely take precedence over eye candy, but I wish the artistic style (as well as the personalities of the AI's), was a bit more elegant and mature. This preference probably stems from the fact that I also like simulation type games (although it's been years since I've played any), so maybe I'm not really being fair to the genre. More specifically, I wish GalCiv II had more of the seriousness that is inherent in strategy games such as Rome: Total War and even Space Empires IV. On the flipside however, some of the flavor text does make me laugh at times.
Now for my question... As of now, I haven't had any real trouble with the game (except that I can't seem to find enough time to play it!) I understand just about all the concepts fairly well, but there is one very minor issue that I can't seem to resolve. When you go to purchase a ship, and select the top choice (where you pay the full price right away), at the bottom of that menu there is text specifying, "Weekly Expenses After Purchase." I'm confused about that though... If I pay all of it now, why would there be a weekly expense after my purchase? Also, this alleged expense does not seem to be deducted from my income once I make the purchase. Am I missing something obvious here? I appreciate any advice, help, and comments. And sorry for the long post, this is my first ever after lurking in the shadows for years. Thanks.
