Allies?

While I have only been playing (non-stop) for a couple of weeks. I noticed last night after I allied with the Korx that even though I had a long standing war with the Arceans they continued to maintain "Friendly" relations. I let it go figuring their relations should at LEAST worsen over time. I did not track time but it has to have been at least 20 turns and they are still the best of pals with the Arceans as the Arceans continue to send fleet after fleet to attack their ally (me).

Is this a bug?

On a separate note: I was wondering if there is at least a possiblity that the AI will attempt to backstab an ally (player or other AI).

It seems your allies only join your wars when there's almost no risk to them.

In my last game (all AI civs at Bright), I had five allied races when I got dragged into a war with the Yor, who outranked me militarily. Yes, it would seem my plan to have so many friends that no one would dare attack us backfired brilliantly.

Except for the Altarians (who were the ones who dragged me into the war in the first place), none of my allies accepted any deal to attack the Yor, using the excuse that they were "too powerful". It was only AFTER I turned things around and nearly conquered the Yor that my allies finally joined in. Naturally, I tried hard to conquer the last Yor worlds before these guys could get to them - such lazy allies don't deserve a share of the spoils...

Also, if their relations are too good with the race you are asking them to attack, you can't even ask them. This happens when they are friendly enough to be able to be allies.

hmmmm.... Then I would have to classify that as a bug then.

If one faction wishs to remain "friendly" with another then they should not ally with another faction that is CURRENTLY AT WAR with them. And if war breaks out later, they should disolve the alliance. You can not have allies that do not come to your aid when several BILLION enemy storm troopers are bearing down on your homeworld. Whats the point? Just my opinion mind you.

There's been a lot of study in Game Theory on two-player games. What this looks like is how comparatively little is known about three-player (and above) games.

For three players, all I know is: The enemy of my enemy is my friend. The friend of my friend is my friend. The friend of my enemy is my enemy. And competition for a friendship becomes part of the game.

Is there more to it, when a fourth player is added? Teams vs teams and perhaps specialization?

Not in GC II there isn't. I once had a game where everyone was allied to someone who was allied to someone who was allied to someone, etc., such that all nine surviving races were part of one big alliance chain. However, they kept going to war--which resulted in a situation where, every two months at most, every civ in the galaxy was guaranteed to be at war with every other civ, and every civ was at war with at least two civs who were allies of their allies. For example, I was allied with the Terrans and Thalans. The Terrans and Thalans were at war with each other. The Terrans were allied to the Torians and Arcean, the Thalans were allied to the Korx, and I was at war with the Torians, Arceans, and Korx. (I took a screenshot of the relations tab right after this happened once. I lost it, but I wish I hadn't. It was hilarious.)

It sounds to me like the AI may be allying too easily/quickly (lord knows nations don't do it in reality so easily!). And when the AI does ally itself it does not "respect" the alliance as would be the norm in "our real world".

When a nation finds itself in an alliance with someone who is at war with a "friend" it must be forced to choose its course of action: 1.) Break the alliance or 2.) Declare war on your allies foe.

I honestly can not rationalize the defination of "ally" any other way.

I seem to remember a post by "Frogboy" awhile back on alliances that pretty much stated that the AI gets to decide on how to support allies in war with other races. An ally at the outbreak of war will come to your aid if they are not allied with the race that declared war on you.

If you declare war on an alien that the ally is not allied with, they get to choose if they want to come to help, generally I have noted that after you have "kicked the lions share of booty on the aliens fleet." your friends come a running to help you with the clean up (and subsequent military "colonization") of the planets your star troopers haven't had a chance to get to yet.

If the AI is allied with both of you it can and does freaking nothing as far as I can tell, course, on the other paw, I or them normally don't last to long. When war is declared either I am ready to lay the proverbial kat smack down or I get the kat smacked outta me...
