Reseting a Starting Race give Major Advantages for some Races. Some others got Nothing

After pressing 'reset' button on the race ability screen you got full 10 points AND some special abilites. Here is the list:


The Loosers:

Human 10 ablity points, 6% logistics
Arcean 10 ablity points, 7% logistics


Nothing special here, just the 10 points


Some with nice bonus:

Yor 10 ability points, 8% logistics, 25% miniaturization
Thalan 10 ablity points, 6% logistics, 10% miniaturization
Drengin 10 ablity points, 7% logistics, 25% morale
Iconian 10 ablity points, 7% logistics, 50% Research
Altarian 10 ablity points, 5% logistics, 30% luck, 30% creativity
Korx 10 ablity points, 6% logistics, 15% economics, 25% trade, 10% courage
Torian 10 ablity points, 6% logistics, 25% morale, 10% luck, 20% courage


They got something, more or less good. But still in additional to the 10 ability points.


The absolute Highlord:

Drath 10 ablity points, 6% logistics, 50% defence, 25% military production, 25% diplomacy, 50% espionage


The Drath bonus is absolute big. You can get this all + 10 ability points by just reseting the Race abilities!


For me this is a big bug. It seems, reseting doesn't has any effect on the special race ability.


pls fix it!

Those abilities are unique race abilities.
They are on top of regular 10 points.

Other non-unique abilities plus remaining points give 10.

So there is no bug, just maybe some racial imbalance.

By the way, I think you mixed up few things, or don't use latest patch.

Here is correct list:

Human: Trade +25%, Diplomacy +25%, Logistics +6
Drengin: Morale +25%, Logistics +7
Altarians: Luck 30%, Creativity 30%, Logistics +5
Acerans: Logistics +7
Torians: Morale 25%, Luck 10%, Courage 20%, Logistics +6
Yor: Loyalty 100%, Miniatuarization 25%, Logistics +6
Korx: Economics 15%, Trade 25%, Courage 10%, Logistics +6
Drath: Defense +50%, Military Production 25%, Diplomacy 25%, Espionage +50%, Logistics +6
Thalans: Loyalty 40%, Miniaturization 10%, Logistics +6
Iconians: Logistics +7


So big losers are Acerans and Iconians (just extra logistic point).
While Thalans are mini-Yor.

Now there is also question of staring techs to add into the mix, but it doesn't really help since some of better races also have good tech.

Interesting to note that Custom Race also has its unique abilties (so it's not so custom):
Soldering 25%, Loyalty 20%, Logistics +6

That's actually kind of funny. I thought it was a glitch and went through and selected a check box under each of the ones showing up without points then removed the check. It removed the bonus and I started with only the abilities from the 10 points I was givin. I didn't realize I was actually handicapping the race I chose by doing this. I guess that is another way to make the game harder for yourself.

I never thought to try this. I think I will make a different race now. I was using custom only but did not need the extra soldier ability. I thought the basic races had to be played as is. THis makes me wonder what my next race will be. I mean picture Drath with full military bonus pumping out ships with 50 % defense. Not to mention using the diplomacy to get the best weapons from the other races. Wow! to much to consider now. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

One thing going in favor of the iconians I believe they have the best starting homeworld. I believe it is 14 tiles initially and IIRC jumps up to 20 or so once you switch to neutrality. Sure the second planet is not very good but still the large homeworld can help at least on a medium or smaller map without a lot of colonization going on

You didn't take things like planets, tech, ethics, and any modifiers into account. The Yor ALWAYS have a permanent weakness in diplomacy because they are robotic and hate sentient life, they will always have a modifier that can't be changed and is hard-coded.

The Iconians get an amazing homeworld, tend to be liked, and very good starting tech.

But the Drath are very powerful. Espionage allows you to make sure you know what other planets are doing, and defence allows you to counter any weapon effectively. With the up-coming changes to the combat system, I'm fairly sure they're about to become the best race.

Seems to be a little bit cheap to pick the races with better bonuses, particularly the Drath. That said I might give it a go to get me over the hump from tough to harder games. I play on smaller maps and such help will probably help me survive the early game.

Well I don't see Drath as hugely overpowered since they don't dominate in the games I've seen. They pull strings behind the scenes, but in no means the best race. I do play at tough + so they're not gimped in my games either.

Is that detailed somewhere, or this is just hypothesis that can't be proved?

I noticed tech and ethics thing, but I haven't seen it as balance element,
Yor for example, have some of the best techs and race picks.
Draths are not much worse either.

I dont know if anyone will read this but anyway. I know all about it and theres a bug in it. Create a custom race and save it. Then load. The bonus goes up. Repeat. Bonus goes up. I have a race with a 200% deplomicy bonus! Needs fixing.

Yes, yes it is detailed. Quite a way back in the journals, a month or so before release, Frogboy listed the modifiers to diplomacy, things like "You are significantly more powerful, +3" "You have recently paid them tribute, +1" "You have high diplomacy +2".

It also said "You are the Yor (or you're not the Yor) -1", I'll have a look for the link

And Ion, I'm fairly sure that's on the "to be fixed" list.

For anybody interesed, starting planet class for homeworlds are like this:

Thalans: 15
Iconians: 14
Altarians: 12
others: 10

Which leaves Arceans as biggest losers.
No better planet, no extra racial abilties, no tech significantly better then others...

I also find it rather annoying that you can actually uncheck racial bonuses and get no points out of it. In my mind they should unremovable and colored differently in Abilities tab. If you really want to disable racial abilities, there is the custom race option right

On the other hand, it's kinda odd that such races could be penalized for thier abilities.
For example Korx had 15% economy bonus.
But if I check any of economy traits, then they get those bonuses instead for standard price, effectively losing any advantage they got from extra 15% in Economy.

If you really want to disable racial abilities, there is the custom race option right


Actually, custom race has its own racial abilities too. With solidering and loyalty bonuses.
