Heavy Figher

Ok so I'm pretty new to this game, and it's hard for me to get my civ off the ground when I get bombarded with "heavy fighters" at the begining of the game. Could anyone tell me what the prereqs are for the heavy fighter? as of now I have to overload them with defenders which takes up WAY too much of my supplies and effort.

Heavy fighter is just a name that the AI likes to use for various small hull ships. They might be almost any ship with more than a 1/0 power rating.

Click on the "heavy fighter" see what its got and build a ship to counter it. If you are building defenders you are on the right track. Just research up the weapons tree (lasers, missiles, guns) and you will soon be able to build a ship that can stand up to them.

are you also designing your own ships? don't just wait for the core ships to become available.

Which is a very important advice. Do not use the core designs delivered with the game. They're bad. Not usable. Plain simple suck. Unusable. Well, you get the drift.

Imho it's one of the most important part of the game (at least the military, non-economic part) to design your ships so that they can counter the enemie's one.

The designers didn't just make them that way to screw us of course, thing is you have to modify your designs to fit the technology you have. Every time you get better engines or better weapons or better defenses, you can benefit from using the new ones because they're usually smaller or stronger than the old. As well as having to match defenses to the attacks you're facing, and making sure not to use guns the enemy has defenses against.
