Never played GalCiv 1, but this doesn't seem like a great idea...

One, it would take thousands of nukes, really, to take out the whole world (maybe hundreds, but still, a lot).

Two, it really be kinda unbalanced being able to obliterate their cities from space.

I think he is talking about cruise missiles... you could make them in GalCiv1, and they were good for taking out expensive ships. The missiles were basically high-speed, high-attack, low-defense, low-cost ships that were consumed when they attacked (like a transport). They weren't useful against planets, they could only attack ships.

Dont really see the need as a player for missles seeing the comp doesnt build ships that can even compare to ships a human designed.

Would be nice for the AI to have those though might give them somewhat of a shot as far as their millitary performance goes..

As long as their are no "nukes" i'm happy. I found the nukes in the Civ games too powerful, and basically won the game for people.

Missles just don't really fit the new module of ship design. Although maybe you could research a warhead tech, and then add it to any hull you wanted, and it would be a 1 shot deal, with a lot of power. (more warheads for more power....)

i just want cruise missle like in the game before. as for "need", you don't even need this game. it's a matter of "want". and just because you don't like them doesn't mean they shouldn't be in. and you can already put missles on the ships. i don't care about that. i like to send a fleet of missles to their larger ships before a major attack.

as for "unbalancing" the game, that's totally rediculous. maybe you should play galciv1 and now what i'm talking about before you condemn my suggestion. they were a nice tool in the previous version.

Galciv1 isn't Galciv2. The reason that they shouldn't be in this game is that they would ruin the balance between the different weapons and defences that are in the game now.

wow ignuss, thanks for pointing out that they are different games. i mean, i know i'm so stupid i can barely breathe. i was wondering why i had to pay for the same game twice, but you just solved the big mystery for me. wow, they are TWO different games. oh my god, i have to go think about this for a while. you know, to let it sink into my stupid mind. maybe you could have actually mentioned some specifics on how i would unbalance the game, or ANYTHING constructive???

and don't give me that crap about unbalancing the game. it could be done. they could have an extremely high cost or something. i'm sure the guys at stardock could figure it out. if not, a mod would be nice. and here's an idea. if a mod comes out that allows cruise missle technology, DON'T USE THE MOD. it's that simple. there's no reason to post something that says you wouldn't use it. who cares?!?!?! don't use it. i would still like to see something along these lines.

You know, you could always create ships with nothing but the super powerful weapons (Nano Ripper, or the Evil only weapons). Expensive as the dickens, but they'd get the job done. Could even do it with the cargo hull.

What more do missiles add, besides being inexpensive and therefore poorly balanced? Just cosmetics.

Actually, a handful of current-level nukes would rip earth off it's axis, and literally break it.

i'm glad everyone could stay focused and talk about this subject. half of these posts should have never even been written. i say i would like to see a mod, and other people want to tell me they wouldn't use it. who cares??? don't use it then. if you have something to say about HOW it would unbalance a game or be a bad idea, fine, but be specific. "i don't like them" or "it wouldn't work" are not valid reasons.

This topic should never have been written. It IS unbalancing, if you can't see that then you're blatantly ignorant. Yes, they WILL come back, and they will be changed to help balance them (no suns being blown up, just single planets)

Ummmm... No.

There have been volcanic eruptions on earth far more powerful than multiple hydrogen bombs.
There have been similar meteoric collisions. The earth didn't get knocked off its axis or broken,
(except for in the case of the moon's formation which must have required one very large rock).
The 1883 Krakatoa eruption was a 200 megaton explosion. Largest nuke ever used was only
57 megatons.

Current day nukes would have no affect on the earth's orbit whatsoever. The earth just has way too much mass.

Definately a negligible impact on the Earth's axis. The largest threat on the planets' population (outside the blast radius) would probably be nuclear winter that would ensue basically because of all the smoke and dust kicked up into the atmosphere which would block solar radiation, the original source of our heat and energy. The fall out radiation wouldn't be a whole lot of fun for the people either...

In any case, mod in missiles if you want, personally I don't care for them to be added in officially. If they were added however, I'm confident that they could be introduced in way that would not upset balance. I think a properly armed freighter could effectively serve the same purpose however and with proper use of the ship editor, could even make it look like a missile.

Back to the question at hand.... So, would a cruise missile always be treated as a missile? Or a mass driver screaming in at hyper velocity? How do I balance my defenses against it? does it mean every time I build a big ship I have to counter that weapon type? GalCiv 1 was just "weapons" and "defenses" and cruise missiles worked well against it... But would it work well here?

Marcathonas has some strange ideas. 'Breaking' a planet is right up there in wanked-out scifi... the best we could hope to do is depopulate the larger mammals.

However, I think they deliberately took out cruise missiles. I don't really see why they'd put them back in - like many other features suggested, it's a 'pure cheese' suggestion. Yes, it would be neat to do. It would SUCK DONKEY ANUS to have it constantly done to you - and if the AI was built to use the feature, it's be done to you ALL THE TIME.
