I have review from empires data files and have concluded that you maybe in need of some help. It is a shame that there is no dualotronic interface system installed in this poor excuse for an interface package or I'd help your empire to defeat your enemies. But alas you'll have to settle for a sample of my wealthy experience instead.
To increase your empires chances at survival focus your beginning efforts on expansion, don't be affraid to over expand in the first year or two of a encounter. Grabbing much needed worlds is a must for any empire, remember to use your empires budget to purchase needed colonisers. If you find yourself in a large section of the galaxy use a smaller population count on your ships, and try to maximise the morale for the first year of expansion, after this push your taxes higher to ripe the rewards for the early expansion. By the end of the first year you should be well on your way to conquering the galaxy.
Remember aliens can not hurt you with ships alone, they need weapons, and weapons need researching, and research costs money, denying your enemies worlds limits money and therefore slows them down CONSIDERABLY.
