Trade for techs? Too easy

I don't have the game, but I had the occasion to try it at a buddy's, so I wasn't able to see the whole thing. But from what I saw, and it disappointed me. What happened, is that in a very short game, I was able to trade so many technologies in. Of course it wasn't a big game, and I left soon after, but is it always like that? Is it just easy as sending Planetary Invasion and recieving 10 techs?
