You may be wrong Martok, here is a incerpt from the written review of the twilight of the Arnor expansion. [...] What do you think that means.
And [link="https://forums.galciv2.com/311088/get;1724507"]here[/link] is a direct quote from Frogboy confirming what the first three responders said. In other words, I think your reviewer needs to do a better job of fact checking. - Ash

Addressing what I can, ignoring what I can't:
One question I can think of: Are beam weapons superior to "guns" and missiles? I ask b/c I usually do beams but tried missiles and was surprised how costly they were for minimal (it felt) damage .... ?
None are innately superior to the others. Mass drivers are the cheapest and do the least damage. Missiles are the most expensive and do the most damage. Beam weapons are between the two. So the manual tells me, at

I noticed this for the first time in my most recent game - playing a Custom race in a Medium galaxy on Painful. Fortunately, the game was almost over when it started happening, so it didn't affect the outcome, but it is nevertheless potentially a very serious issue. FWIW, I don't think it affected all of the techs at once. Some things seemed suddenly very expensive but there were still others that I could research in 1-2 turns. I think I would share the opinion of others

Primarily, although not exclusively, they want two things: 1) Low taxes. 2) Lots of space. That is, the higher your tax rate and the more people you have on a planet, the less happy the people are. After that come all the various morale-adjusting buildings/resources/starbases/technologies/trade goods. It's a good idea to keep in mind that farms - which increase the population ceiling on a planet - indirectly make people unhappier (because of that whole more-people-
Also seems if I run through the setup screens then back out to the main menu the Metaverse and Tournaments buttons are greyed out. I have to restart the game to get them back.I am experiencing this as well.I just wanted to say that the expansion is great! I love all the new content and the updated textures are awesome!
Not just you. Brad mentioned elsewhere that he's still working on the ToA manual. - Ash
If I purchase a digital download of the expansion, is there an easy way to backup the downloaded file for future re-installation? Or, once its active on my Stardock account will it just re-DL the whole thing if I ever have to reformat?
Well, it will re-download the whole thing if necessary but there is an easy way to back up your files. I don't know how you do it in Impulse (don't have it) but in Stardock Central you just right-click on the item you want to back up and there'

I don't have a superfast connection but, as someone who has whined at you periodically in the past about getting really crappy speeds through SDC, I am very happy to report that ToA is currently DLing as fast as my connection will allow. Whether it was this update or a previous one that improved things for me, it's much appreciated. :) I can't really say it will make me more likely to buy software digitally, though, since I was already very willing to do so. - Ash

Should this be used with a new game? When you click on the link to get the latest build, it says this: "Note: Using saved games from previous versions not recommended." So I'm going with "yes" on that question. - Ash

Gracias. I had no idea that button was there. And, even looking for it, it was so dark against the dark background that I almost didn't see it. Thanks. - Ash

You can conver some of them into Research or Military Production by clicking the icons at the top of the colony management screen for each area (it focuses your production on that world on one of the three areas at a time). Other than that, unused production capacity is just wasted. As far as the money issue goes, it doesn't get "converted" into cash, but the effect is the same: every point of production capacity, whether it's military, social, or research, costs 1bc/turn to actually

It doesn't have descriptions (and I have the same query about how one gets a "Wounded in Action" medal), but you can see a list of all the currently implemented medals here: http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=legend EDIT> And on that topic, why don't *my* medals show up beneath my posts? - Ash

A. Also, what does "4x" mean? I see it a lot when refering to these types of games. It refers to the basic type of gameplay that's at the core of the genre: eXplore eXpand eXploit eXterminate Those, in a nutshell, are the four phases of this kind of strategy game - and why it's called "4X". -

Disagree. Three points: (1) It's somewhat "realistic". Gradual refinements in technology are a fact of how such things are created. Granted, you can argue the degree to which the game should reflect that (2 Laser techs? 4? 5?). My point with this is just that jumping *too* quickly, however one might define "too", would lose the reality of the process. (2) the game offers a built-in way to customize this to your liking. It's not necessary to remove techs from the tree itself

Looking at my Empire (http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=empire&id=39), one player (myself) has completed a game, and scored some points. Yet the Empire totals still show 0 GP and 0 points. Is there something I don't understand about how Empire scoring works? Or is there a reason that my game/points don't seem to be carrying over to my Empire at this point? TIA. - Ash

Sshhh. People will figure out why. Oh, is there something going on with this game today? Should we be excited about whatever you're doing? EDIT> Hey, the History button at the button of SDC looks interesting now. - Ash

How do I view the tutorials again? Once they're downloaded, they're in the Gfx\Tutorials folder. You'll need a player that can view .bik video files. http://www.radgametools.com/ is the standard place to get such a player. Download the Bink video player from that site, and open the tutorial videos through it - and enjoy. <img src="smiles/Smile.gif" b

They hate us and they want to watch us squirm. I know they wouldn't release them last night in case something then went wrong while all the Devs were asleep. Dunno why the wait til middle of the afternoon today, though. I would presume not a retail issue, as many stores won't be receiving the game until later in the week, anyway. The generous part of my personality likes to think they're holding it back to get some nice

I'm having the same problem as "Heavens Door"... I can't get past the "processing data" bit. I'll try using my roommate's copy of IE6 later. (Currently using Opera 8.5.1.) Had the same problem with Opera (same version); it worked fine for me as well after switching to IE. - Ash

There's only one sentence in there that is rather grammatically "icky". If you want to keep the same sentence structure, better would be: "It's people like you who do this kind of thing to computer players in video games on your planet." That said, the sentence structure is icky in its own right. Too many consecutive prepositional phrases. I would recommend something more like: "People like you do this to computer players in your planet's video games." - Ash

Just double click on the tutorials file and it should open right up. They're all in there. There should be no need to use a viewer at that point. This is wrong. First, if all you are seeing the GFX\Tutorials folder are four PNG images, then you have not downloaded the tutorials. Follow the advice in starfuryzeta's post about getting the re

Just curious... the only other person that I've currently marked as a Senator in the Empire I've created tells me it doesn't seem to have any effect (other than showing names in bigger fields at the top of the Empire listing). What, exactly, is the feature supposed to do? Just look pretty for the people that are deemed the best players in an Empire? Or is there some function I'm not aware of? TIA. - Ash

So, you are saying the extra components are really nothing more then bits and pieces to add on to your ship for looks only? Nothing added to really change the way it behaves, or any real outworking that would give an advantage over an opponent? I guess I am still a bit in the dark on this one. Everything I have heard and read around

Any Joss Whedon fans here? From what I've seen, I think Brad has the right sense of humour to do a pricelessly funny Joss Whedon-style commentary. "And that's how we almost screwed that scene up. But fortunately, no one will ever know, unless I say something stupid on a DVD commentary. But what are the odds of that happening?" - Ash
