Qrt, for TA or DA expansion?
DA. Until this point, I didn't even know there was a TA version, and not being able to customize ships sounds like a deal-breaker to me.
it seems shadow/vorlon factions werent quite finished but i dont mind it much really.
How so?

I've heard those complaints about AI tech trading, and I saw some of that here, but this wasn't quite the same thing. The complaints are about AIs trading techs easily that they refuse to trade at all with the player, but trading with the pirates should be flat out impossible. I've never seen anything like this before, but I don't read a lot of debug.err files either. I doubt this has any bearing, but I've also discovered that the evil minors (Snathi & Dark Yor) begin at peace with t
I had the Torians wanting to trade for my starting techs before I made first contact with them.
This is normal, if weird. I've definitely heard from races before I've met them in my games. I've even heard accounts of races declaring war on the player before first contact, although I've never experienced this personally.
Point 2: If you play a Campaign game and subsequently use an Ally or Team member in a Sandbox game as an opponent, you will need to chang

So, I've heard things about a Milky Way custom map in one of the expansions. All I really know about it is that there's Dread Lords near the galactic core and that most habitable planets require extreme colonization techs. Can anyone who's played the map share some information about it? It sounds like a pretty neat idea. In particular, I'm wondering: 1. What effect do the Dread Lords have on the course of play? I tried the 'Unlimited Power' scenario in DL, which featured Dread

Wow, you just can't get along with those Torians, can you? Did the Zeus colony mentioned defect, or did they invade it? I suspect the latter as you aren't at war with them... Liking the angle the story's taking - it's nice to see an AAR from the perspective of 'the common man' rather then the civ leader or a similiarly important position. Like the screenshots too. Screenshots are always good, and map screenshots are among the best. Personally, I think every AAR that isn't a to

So, after my last game (DL, version 1.53), I was randomly going through the debug.err file to read up on the AI's tech trading, and I came across something weird. One of the tech trades was: Debug Message: Year: 2232. Snathi traded Shields to the Pirates! in exchange for Impulse Drive This is truly bizarre. Not only is it impossible to communicate with the pirates in any fashion, as they don't have planets, but the only pirates to appear all game were those that popped u

This might not be a bug. I frequently (for story reasons) begin already knowing the Arceans as the Terrans or vice versa, and I can think of other examples. If these starting relations aren't specifically reset when beginning a new game as Willy describes, you'll have the same relations with your new race.
Personally I would say, the Yor. Their Miniaturization-bonus gives them a warship bonus everytime, which is esp. strong in the beginning. But it's really the map itself that decides that.
Hmm. The Yor used to be horribly weak, but lately they've become much stronger. They were, fittingly enough, my main antagonist in one of those Iconian games. Actually, both the Drengin and Yor seem to become much stronger as I move up difficulty levels, compared to other races. <

A couple of questions to anyone who's played this mod: What's the full list of major and minor races? In DA, what super abilities does each race have? I think some are pretty obvious (Shadows - Super Manipulator), but others I'm stumped on (Narns - ?) Just random things I'm wondering. Also, are Vorlon/Shadow ships customizable? How does that work? I know the defaults use invisible components or something to prevent the ships from looking comically ugly...

I haven't played the campaign much, but from what I've read, that last mission "Escape" is a bust on any difficulty. Dread Lords take forever to build things anyway and given that there's only 1 on the planet, it will take them literally years to build a single structure. Not really sure what that mission's point was supposed to be...

Don’t know… I don’t actually have any new ship styles right now. Haven’t bothered to download any and wouldn’t have the first clue how to make one. This is sort of a strange question, so bear with me. In DL, which is the only GalCiv game I have right now, there are six ship styles (Terran, Drengin, Torian, Altarian, Yor, and Dread Lords). If I wanted to mod the Drengin to use the Altarian ship style, I would change: 3 to 4 in the Drengin race code. However, if I create a new ship style, or download one from

Interesting... Is this for all the races? If so, it could explain why my Terrans always seem to have weaker-then-normal diplomacy. That said, I press "clear" each new game I start, so I don't have to worry about this being permanent. In regards to strong AI races vs. strong human races, what AIs (in DL, I know you can tweak it in DA) seem to be the most aggressive? I rather like winning diplomatic victories, but lately, it seems as if the entire galaxy is overrun by pacifist

As it turns out, you're correct. For some reason I thought that the +10 economics was an inherent bonus akin to those of the Drath. I just checked and there are two points into it. You still can't recreate the Iconians with a custom race, though. I checked and there is no way any custom race could begin with as many technologies as they do. I guess that's actually supposed to be balanced by the fact that they start with no bonuses at all. Still, on paper, they don't actually

16 Replies 63,652 Views

Actually, the Iconians do NOT have ten points to spend. They have eight. I think this was intended to be balanced by the fact that they started with more technologies then any other race, but it seems to have made them weaker (or so I thought). The Iconians are actually one of the only DL civilizations that can't be re-created by a custom race, with the Drath and Yor (as you said) and possibly one more being the others. There's also a few other quirks such as starting with an u

Reply to Jordan's Revenge in AARs

I agree with the guy before me... this was a fun read and a drastic improvement from "Altaria's Last Stand". Don't get me wrong, that was a good AAR (or fanfiction, giving that this isn't actually based on a game)... but this was a great one. Jordan was superbly developed from an obnoxious jerk into a natural leader (but still a jerk...) and your other lead characters were creatively done as well, especially Ordo. Loved the whole "evi

Neat... seems to be written sort of as a Homeric saga (guess that's why your civilization has a Greco-Roman flavor). Looking forward to this. Random question about the setup: Those races look almost identical to the ones from "The General and the President". Is there a reason you never play against the Korx and Yor? As far as the difficulty goes, even if you can't pull it off, sometimes losing can make for as good AARs as winning can! I play on Tough (one level below), but I r

Hmm, so the Dread Lords really are a mega event in TOA? Good to hear. I don't own DA or TOA, but I was a bit disappointed with the reports of the Dread Lords Event in DA. As far as the alliance thing goes, it might be worth noting that I declared war on the Torians in response to their attack on my Thalan allies, so that might have had something to do with it. I doubt it, though, as the AI usually treats honoring alliances the same as ordinary wars of aggression. On t

I'm nowhere near playing on Suicidal (heck, I still struggle on Tough), but this is certainly an awesome guide when/if I get there. Three questions (if you're still around): 1. You had research set to "Very Fast". Is this a personal preference or do you feel it's necessary to compete with Suicidal AIs? 2. You had Close relations with the Korath Clan in year three but didn't ally until nearly the end of the game. Any particular reason for this? I usually ally with any A

Thanks for the input, Iztok and Moosetek. My responses:
Hi! I don't own DA or TOA. Edit: Problem solved! Apparently, I needed to copy the xml files into My Documents, then alter them with Notepad. What I was doing was opening them with Internet Explorer and copy/pasting. I would suggest adding something to those modding guides about how to edit the xml files. There's still a few would-be modders out there, and it could help us a lot.

I've figured out what the problem is, but not what's causing it. Apparently, I'm doing something wrong when I alter the original RaceConfig xml file. I tried another test mod in which the ONLY change I made was tweaking the Torians' ethos to make them neutral, and not touching the race 0 code at all. Whatever's causing the problem has nothing to with the race 0 code itself. However, I don't know what it is I'm doing wrong. What I do is copy the original RaceConfig file into Notepad, m

Disclaimers: Thanks to a lack of cash, I don't own DA or TOA. The following was played on the original GalCiv 2. I play on "Tough", so this may not work for you Masochistic/Suicidal types (in fact, it probably won't). I'm four years into my current game (Huge galaxy, common everything, loose clusters) as the Iconians with my preferred picks, and I'm completely dominating the AIs (Drengin, Korx, Yor, Arceans, Thalans).
