The prior posts all have good stuff, so I'll limit this to what I can add. I always play as Yor, and find that the economy is always a concern but usually works out ok. 1. Your first priority in research is the techs necessary to get the recruiting center and efficiency center. After that, you need to research ion drive and sensors, so you can put out two or three survey ships. Grabbing anomalies faster than the AI will save your butt. <

Just thought of an actual use. Since the planets get reduced to asteroids, maybe use these in your own territory on stars without usable planets, get some production. Sorry if this was posted above and I was too lazy to lookit.
Same day I read this I started a new game. Close to home planet, saw a lovely pq 20 planet. Bonus of +43% research. And a +300% research tile. Spooky.
I had read that, and would probably pursue it if I still wasn't so pissed at them for the above-mentioned bs. They don't need any additional help from me.
I've finally stepped up to suicidal and TA is now awesome. Three games in a row now, the Drengin have woken up and are a gd nightmare. The Altarians are weird, having this tendency to fill out the planetary invasion and colonization parts of the tree without arming themselves for a very long time, then in the mid-game showing up with battleships with like 200 defense. The Korath sometimes forget to colonize, but are always an early target for me just so I don't have
The Yor have a problem with some one-shot techs (nothing comes after them) like Stellar Streams. They also seem to have a hang-up at Collective Manufacturing III - not sure what it's about, but they aren't researching beyond it.
I laughed at this because I always play the Yor, and I usually take a long pause at CM III. Seems like that's the point where my economy can just barely handle th
Upgrading ships: Before you can upgrade, you need to have a newer (or at least different) ship design of the same size, either made by the AI ("core") or by you. Click on the ship, and you should have a few options such as guard, sentry, and upgrade. Choose upgrade, and you'll get a screen for upgrading options. Squint, and there's even an option for "upgrade all" underneath the ship's picture. This can get gd expensive. Also, you'll see that the AI designs
Pfft, turn off surrender, it's the most b/s thing ever anyway.
It's also possible that they have captured another planet which built the orbital command center, so would still have the benefit civ-wide. Did they capture any minor races?
In TA, playing Yor, econ is always a fight. You can always count on the minor races for help. Early, as someone else on here noted, a trade of 999 influence for 100ish bc is nice, and you can always sell diplomatic relations and trade (to your future benefit) for more money. Later on, build up some stuff like aphrodisiac, micro-bots, etc., and techs that everyone else already has, and trade to minors for econ and research treaties. They're down. Just don't trade
Playing as the Yor at obscene difficulty (is suicidal much worse? this is about my limit). Thalans are out of control, with a military rating 3x mine. Research up phasors, thinking once I get the best phasors, I can even the odds. Phasors IV clicks up, then Doom Ray, same turn. Life is good. If there's a better ability to have in this game, I don't know what it is.
I think this is totally valid, since I do it too. I have a survey ship, a constructor, and a space miner design using just ion drives that are useful the entire game. Colony ships, not so much, since I won't be building many after the initial rush. I never arm or armor these ships. Transports would be the real exception, it's useful to make these as fast as possible.
First time trying to step up to masochistic level as the Yor, and it's going about as expected: rough. The Torians are everywhere, the Drath recently began their ascent to godhood (on the other side of the map, other side of the Torians), these are problems. Wondering if it was a waste of money to build counter-espionage centers everywhere... Then the best event ever happens. Spies descend on everyone, shutting down factories, etc. Everyone but me, that is.&nbs
I always play as Yor, this start works pretty well for me. 1. Early on, you have two structures to go for: The efficency center (25%) and the recruiting center (10%). Recruiting center also boosts population, critical for economy. Research efficiency I, then the first tech on the track to the recruiting center (stellar fortification? or the one before that...), going back and forth between the two tracks will save time, it seems. You'll get the recruiting
