Time to raise the difficulty level !!! [e digicons][/e]

I've always found that turning tech trading/brokering off will more stiffle the player than the AI. Esp. in TA where you can have all AI techs for an apple and an egg....
And to the contrary, speed-nerfing modules coupled with the Isolator-SuperAbility will freeze enemy ships when they try to approach your own AoI.
Yep, and sometimes the notice (to the right at the screen) that a planet has been infiltrated by an enemy spy lags for a turn or two. And ships sometimes circumvent asteroids, sometimes not, it's a mess.
In regards to the DL hull issues: are you sure about that? The normal DLs seem to only have three basic hulls, but they use them for all sizes of ship - I've seen Dread Lord 'fighters' (tiny), 'defenders' (small), 'frigates' (medium - same hull as the defenders, but different HP) 'battleships' (large) and 'dreadnoughts' (huge - same as the large hulls, but different HP again). I've also seen several types of DL cargo hulls, including tran
I assume you're refering to TA. There, the Yor are heavily underestimated. They are difficult to play, with all their one-per-planet buildings, some important yellow-techs missing, and in fact, expensive planetary improvements. In TA 101 they've been labelled pretty weak because of that; and the AI can't master them; esp. because they've been nerfed to 50% natural abilities (which can be changed, though). Point is, for everything there's a possible workaround and if the way you setup
On the DreadLords I have to say that in my games they behaved all pretty well. The usual tactic to storm their planet(s) very early did work out on lesser difficulty-levels, but on Suicidal it doesn't work anymore. At least, not to my experience. There's always a maxed out Defender in orbit, even when I approach in the first few months.... The point is that the higher the difficulty is, the more "methods" the AI will have at its disposal, and on "suicidal" the DL's can pretty much rus
BTW, what happens if you give a race the Dread Lords ship style?
Be careful when using that option. The DL's don't possess all hulls. A race playing with their shipstyle won't be able to create the multitude of ships as the other races can. For the AI this can be esp. dangerously/stiffleing, because he will lack some basic designs right off the start, and he can't do anything against it. It might break the game.
(Aside: Is there technology cost inflation caused by an increased map size in Gal Civ II?) Is this effected by the frequency of habitable planet???
In DL I can't say, but in DA there certainly is. Though I didn't look hard at the numbers, but in a tiny galaxy technology research can be done ~30% faster (even without PreCursorLib-tiles) than in the gigantic one. No.
After you achieve a "close" relationship with an AI that you want an alliance with, check their technology to see if they have the "alliance" tech. If they do not have it, as was noted above, you can trade or give it to them. However, there is one mistake I have made that you can avoid. Do NOT close out of the communications window with that AI once you have traded or given them the "alliance" tech. If you do, you will have to
Does it make a difference if the proposed ally partner is at war or not when gifting them something? Do they appreciate it more when they are at war?
In some ways, yes. If a war goes bad for a civ it might take their Military Rating down - so they will more look up to you, which might translate into a strong diplo bonus. The other thing is that they occasionally ask you to help them. Gift them something (until the
Interesting... Is this for all the races? If so, it could explain why my Terrans always seem to have weaker-then-normal diplomacy. That said, I press "clear" each new game I start, so I don't have to worry about this being permanent.
Yes - though it won't matter on those races that have pre-selected points which can be re-created.
In regards to strong AI races vs. stro
Well, smaller ships have lesser HP, and lesser space, thus lesser ATT/DEF and most likely the game will consider them to be weaker; and in a fleet they will be attacked first. Actually I found it always more usefull to concentrate to get bigger ships to survive the battles, upgrading them to the same design to refill HP's, or giving them some rest in orbit. With time, they'll gain levels, and become increasingly strong. That's then that type of ship I'd update to most modern weapons usually.<
quoting postI am playing the Dread Lord Campaign via the ToA Menu. Gaah, I didn't know you could do that. I have been playing the severely outdated 1.53 version although I have the Ultimate Edition. Thanks for the headsup. Perhaps I'll replay the campaign in ToA sometimes. Now I need to decide if I should play the Dark Avatar campaign in Twilight or not. The Dark Avatar game is still a pretty recent version after all and I've read that pe
First off, I created this thread in order to rationalize *why* there are secrets kept in some MV Empires. And while I am a member of the KzintiEmpire this whole post does solely reflect *my own personal view* on the matter. The most obvious reason is actually to keep information away from other empires, which is most important when said empires are still active. It might become irrelevant to a stagnant empire (whose members have given up the game) although, and especially when an empi
That's strange. right?
Yup. And I think that should have been taken care of long ago. I mean, right now, just like it is, the situation can very well arise that a lot of racial bonuses are lost. I think it was just two months ago that I discovered that by sheer accident. Now I pay heed to that, but I'm pretty sure that in 2009 most my DL setups were sub-optimal. The danger, esp. for new people who can't know this,
In *all* versions of DL *above* v1.5 and certainly in DA v1.80g and I *believe* all versions of DA above that as well you can indeed buy ships while in debt in exactly the same manner as how you can buy buildings while in debt but perhaps that's an empire secret that you haven't learned yet. Try it yourself on your version of DL or DA. Get into debt and queue a ship on a planet. Of course you can't go to the planet screen
just FYI, in no version of DL, DA or TA you can buy ships when being in debt. No such '"feature" exists. Update your game and see for yourself. 'nuff said.
This is what I encountered in my last MV game. I couldn't get the last AI to surrender their last planet in exchange of a peace treaty because of a big "-- they don't trust us" diplo hit (as I've previously attacked them for 2 times). Instead, I gifted them my treaties, and was fastly "close" in relationships. When then the Alliance was offered to the Krynn they even went so far as to hand me their FlagShip, an Influence StarBase... and their last planet. Actually, I could have had th

Mumblefratz, as long as you put words in my mouth that I never said I will of course correct you. Simply stop that and I will stop, too.
Yes. I specifically contacted you and then KP by PM because I really had no desire to cause you or the Kzinti Emp
You still can't recreate the Iconians with a custom race, though. I checked and there is no way any custom race could begin with as many technologies as they do. I guess that's actually supposed to be balanced by the fact that they start with no bonuses at all. Still, on paper, they don't actually seem that bad. Were all those DL-era posts saying the Iconians were weak just talking about the Iconian AI (which I agree needed work)? [/
