DA seems the way to go for now. There is a only one tech tree for me to deal with while I learn the game mechanics. I'm a builder type, and am starting out on a large map. I didn't like the feel of the small map ... personal preference. Thanks for the feedback!

Auto Focus was the problem. Thanks
O.K. I love the Dark Avatar guide and couldn't wait to try out some of the shortcuts. The most important one for me was the ship/planet management screen. Cool but it doesn't work for me! This is what happens: 1. I select a planet I want to colonize. 2. I click F1 to bring up the management screen so I can find a colony ship. Now the view switches to the sector with the ship whose next turn it is. In the guide it shows the destination planet and the ma
Excellent guide ... covers a lot that will help me get started. I would say it should be required reading for all novices. Any recomendation for type of victory to go for when choosing the size of the map? In previous games, the larger maps required more of a builder mentality. That allowed more time for economic and diplomatic victories. Smaller maps favored a quick rush to grab land. Once in a dominant position, it was usually pretty easy to go for anything.
Awesome! Thanks alot. A big part of this for me is getting organized.
Is it possible to re-name a planet? I guess I should put more thought into naming at first so I can keep track of specializing etc. It would be nice to change the name as the dynamics of the game change. Anyone have a strategy that helps identify a planets use such as Research 1, or Super Producer etc?
I'm really a novice, and am way ... way ... way over my head! The only changes I have ever done were to text files in Alpha Centauri(real easy). I don't know what a Grey-Scaling filter is, or what the usual Alpha-Channel $ Transparency feature is. I would love to learn about the stuff you are talking about, but don't know where to begin. Anyway, I thank you for replying.
Yes, I was talking about the orangy artifacts. Sorry, that sounds like it's way over my head and not really worth the effort. I don't want to break anything! LOL Thanks for the reply.
I know about the customization screen. I just think the base color scheme for the ships looked better in galciv2. They were blue and gray. Now there are these yellow parts on the ship that look funny to me. I don't know much about modding, but if there is a reference to color ... well I would think a new value could be used? Maybe I'm reaching a little??? Just a minor little disappointment, but the gameplay seems fantastic!
Thanks, I was kind of leaning toward TA from what I have read. I'ts time to dive in and see where it leads me.
O.K. I liked the way the ships looked(in the shipyard) in galciv2. Now I was looking forward to the expansions, and the enhanced graphics. Overall everything is much better, but ... the ships in the design screen? Can I(A complete newbie) get rid of the yellow highlights on the ship building screens? Sorry, to me it looks a little cartoonish. Where do I look, and what do I change? I would like everything to be neutral(gray) or shades of gray. Does a
Just got about halfway through my first galciv2 game and got curious about the expansions. Love the game, but thought I might as well jump right into Avatar or Twilight. I purchased them both, but wondered which I should learn first? This is a stiff learning curve for me, so maybe I should start the one with the least number of issues. I thought the tech tree in galciv2 was very redundant and HUGE! Is it any easier in the others? Any thoughts on if I would be
