Also, I read somewhere that you only get multiple defense rolls, ie one for each defense type, when attacked by multiple weapon classes --- though it is my observation (DL I dunno / DA I think / TA yes) that since _weapon mounts_ are fired separately you only ever get one roll anyhow. Then you have to consider the defense reductions... all this only applies for the _first_ attack in which that defense is used in a particular combat round. Also, fractions round down of course when you take the sq

aaaahhhhh...... that explains the one game I played where I did this and made it thru the whole game wondering why it was so easy and the AI's were, well, such _nice_ people to conquer. it also seems to (perhaps?) add mega-events and tech trading and influence victories even if you have them turned off? (it did not help either that early in the game we were hit by first the plague and then the disease, and I was in a position to research the cures and apparently they were not in time - th
Now, given all this.... should I turn surrenders back on (I have not played with them for a while now). Have to think if having or not having them would make it way too difficult, but this is going to be so different I am not sure what the impact will actually be.
I think I am seeing I need to make _one_ exception... if I am at war with the last (only) AI and they ask for peace, which normally by the "must be nice guy" rule I would have to accept then make them pissed off all over again, if they are the very last AI I can turn them down. Just saying this advance "just in case" - in reality the AI does not seem to offer peace often in this kind of circumstance.
I forgot to mention... I always play with no influence or tech or diplo 'soft' victories, although those are still vital tools of course even for a conquest victory. Some of the first few games I played went to influence victories just as I was licking my chops over finally being on the brink of conquering the galaxy with some demonic race. So, I am still keeping with conquest victory only. I do not always play with tech trading but for this one I will because, after all, if they o
I am going to take every most-good alignment colonization choice no matter how painful. I am never, ever, going to declare war except in support of a formalized alliance (that is going to take some behind the scenes manipulation that one). I am going to take no racial bonuses for weapons or soldiering (mil production is okay since that also covers colony ships and constructors and freighters... but maybe on second thought I will eschew that too). I am never going to take War Party or maybe even
post a before and after of a section of the xml file you are trying to modify, so everyine can see if there is a syntax error of some kind. I can tell you for 100% sure by my own experience (as if that needed to be criteria) that modding the race files works, even in TotA. so I suspect there is something you are not entering correctly. you do not have play any turns to see the results, you can go to one of the screens in the civ manager and it shows your racial bonuses etc. which at the s
I dont think much. hmm 100 bases per player * 10 factions * 72* tiles * integer 2 bytes= 144000/1024=140KB
Man, you obviously never had to program 8051s and PIC chips!
btw, I recently noticed that there is a "Free Orion" in the mold of FreeCiv (freeware version of SM's Civilization II) and FreeCol (freeware version of SM's Colonization). Given the other games are excellent I expect/hope FreeOrion would also be. however, I have not actually downloaded or tried it. anyone? sorry to hijack your thread. interesting.

different problem now, since two days ago when stardock updated - my SDC does not get any new posts off the server (and possibly the chat function no longer actually connects to a real server but not sure of that) sound familiar, anyone know what is going on?
well, I did manage to update DA to today's version, but today's beta of TA fails (twice). i am using SDC as admin (vista, but right clicking and running as admin). it has worked like this before. the sdc goes into some phase of waiting for 3 secs at a time but never gets past that. perhaps something about beta being unavailable (although it shows on the sdc update list and queues up). finished by first DA game on a gigantic galaxy today. Makuran won with 12000 points, only app
i actually think it might be better to start all the mines out at least at the basic level - it kind of 'claims' them. kind of the way a colony rush works, just not as effective because they flip so easily, but still I can see why the AI might do it the way it does.
there is a huge thread on this, because the devs have said "no carriers". however, a related idea I think would be valid and perhaps acceptable would be "fleet tenders" which could serve two purposes. they could extend the range of existing ships, which could be measured from the tender (albeit perhaps at a reduced value) much like it is now measured from a planet or starbase. also, they could be used as part of the maintenance cost system for ships - maybe ships within range of a tender could h
test... to see what heppens when I cut and paste a CR into a post (think this whacking sdc)
hmmm... will the Dread Lords drool like the other races with only a few worlds to colonize or worse yet be a dud altogether as one user reported? this is a custom-super-warrior-race sandbox DA game on 'tough' which with only 3-4 worlds per AI race (and mine until I researched the extreme col techs and started looking for pq<8 worlds including the nice pq1-3 ones) has played more like cakewalk at first then some only slightly more advanced beginner mode, note maybe that AI does not seem to deal w
please moderator move this to aar section.... having HUGE trouble with SDC makes this impossible to deal with
what is the deal with submitting my posts the past hour... repeated attempts, repeated lock ups, pain in the *ss
Makuran against the Dread Lords - a middle game DAR (_during_ action report) It had been four or five centuries since the Shah-n-Shah had united the great clans, when the Boyars' armies had filled the skies of Makuran with arrows fired by the warrior caste from the backs of their Tarns. Now with rare exception the only Tarns were seen on the entertainment networks where they had not been replaced by machines used in the zero-gravity combat sports, now replaced in their turn by virtual T
Wyndstar, I guess your results have just been different from mine. And maybe I am doing something wrong (though anymore because of past experience I mostly prefer Arceans, or better yet a custom SUper Warrior race). I read your AAR earlier by the way, very interesting. My large hulls in the game to which I referred were dreadnoughts with about 500 nightmare torpedo attack and a balanced 3-way defense of about 120 or so total. I _did_ only have one real large hull type design. Reading your des
First, the stuff that, while SD has done a great job with the entire concept of GC2, really should have been done long ago... 1. Bug fixes - hate to point it out, because admitedly SD support is mostly soooo good, but plenty reported that nothing has seemingly been done about in literally years? 2. Corrected and consistent descriptions of race characeristics, techs, weapons, buildings and effects. 3. Corrected and consistent displays of costs, incomes, etc. 4. The interaction of
anal (plz excuse the terminology), but what the hey...
the 'grouped' techs (ie something - I, II, III etc)... usually, almost always, they are grouped ina single box, but sometimes and I believe erroneously they are shown as seperate consecutive techs, which means they do not 'line up' neatly against the branches above or below, especially noticeable for the weapon tech branches, which is where I think I saw this. sorry, forget which race so you would have to check thru all the files,
Good idea, and if you need a fully qualified idiot, well, here I am! I think, to use the term loosely, there are a lot of questions that always come up about the number-crunching side of the game (hence, not just a 'do this it works' but an explaination of why it works) in particular...
(1) tax/approval/pop-growth and rush-buy economics especially in the early game, and... (2) fleet combat and impacts on ship design and research priorities (including but not limited to an update
Following applies to TA, and based largely on my memory of one game.
There may be some other aspects. I noticed the Lucky Ranger thing as well, but it is not just Lucky races that get them - they do however seem to get more of them and especially when in most dire need - it is for that reason in fact maybe a bad omen when you start getting a lot of them(!) (at some point they become not very good ships, albeit worth every penny you paid, unless you upgrade them). Try upgrading lucky ra
Also, once you start winning a war you will likely get advanced techs from somewhere down one or both of the other two weapon tech trees. Which means you will not have to research them or any techs preceding them (don't ever research weapon techs that have already been 'bypassed' unless you actually _want_ to build the lower tech weapon for some reason). So for instance you can research to Doom Ray yourself then go to war against a missile empire and steal Quantum torps or whatever and be only a
