I recently forced myself to persist for a couple of tries with the Arceans, just to see if there was something I could do to make them work. I did eventually do pretty well, but it required some serious adjustments to my starting strategies. - I decided that the colony rush is really more about production than speed, and in this respect the Arceans are no worse than anyone else. I like creativity too - especially since some civs can even add to it later on. Ditto with luck - if you pick universalists you get +50%! (So my min damage is half my max damage instead of 0? Me likes!) Lately I almost always max out sensors lately - it's really cheap to do and I find it helps a lot during the colony rush and saves me a lot of moves. If it helps.... Think of the numbers being the soldier #. the reason the smaller side can win is 1- they all landed relatively close while the other had to be spread out over the entire world, and 2- look at the milatary score and tech. I thought the reason the invaders get such a big advantage was air superiority - you've already destroyed their spacecraft so it's assumed that your invasion force can bomb and air strafe with little chance of reprisal.
