Same result with the SOFTWAREVP parameter. Oddly enough, I tried HARDWAREVP and that did not work either. Debug Message: Failed to find a device that can start with hw vp mode. Trying mixed vp. With the new beta, I simply get a black screen upon launching the game. I was launching it normally, not in forced hardware vp mode. avfm8, you crying wouldn't make for a good mega event. My ideas: Expel the most powerful civilization from the United Planets. A widespread communication failure results in ships becoming lost in space. Without working navigation or communication, the ships are never heard from again. I'll just leave it to you guys to come up with reasoning behind this. Turn a random minor race into a major race. A powerful ancient Precursor battle fleet is discover
Yeah, it can be irritating. Usually I let them do it, and if I'm friendly with them I'll buy the planet off them, if not friendly I'll let it revolt. But I agree, the AI should take into consideration the amount of foreign influence on a planet when deciding whether to colonize it.
Addendum: I played a little more and the only graphics I noticed missing were the background stars and nebulas (nebulae?).
CariElf, hw vp worked for me! 50fps when the three starting ships are onscreen; ten times what I was getting before. I didn't notice any graphic weirdness, but I didn't have the game running very long. Do you want the debug file?
There aren't really any stable editors out yet, but if you have patience and don't mind some basic coding, you can make a map with Notepad.
To me cheating implies intent to defraud. Actually cheating means doing somthing to create an unlevel playing feild in your favour, By this definition, exercising makes you a cheater at sports.
Oddly enough I can't seem to get windowed mode to work. I untick "Fullscreen" in video options, but the game remains fullscreen even when I restart it. Alt+Enter doesn't work either.
Unfortunately, no. The framerate is consistent with the one I get in the main game. I tried battles too, but predictably that's even slower. + turn off the background stars and nebulas + play on Medium galaxies or smaller with fewer opponents + reduce the availability of habitable planets, number of stars, etc + turn off mods None of these things help much because it seems to be only the ship models that are causing the severe slow

And this isn't the place for a long-winded debate on the nature of beta testing. You're just cluttering up the thread.
There are unofficial Nvidia drivers at www.guru3d.com No guarantee that it will solve your problem, and there's no guarantee that it will be stable either. Make sure to back up your current driver.
NavyBert, Frogboy was talking about an update needs to be done on their side. We'll have to wait for another patch to get the benefits of it
Well ironically we've got a solution but not an ideal solution. If we update to the new DirectX SDK MS released, the problem is solved. However, the new SDK doesn't support Windows 2000, ME, or 98. Is ANYONE here running on Win2K, ME, or 98? Forgive me if I'm pushing it, but does "the problem" include both the graphical issues some people are getting and the performance issues others (like myself) have? I'
If it helps at all, I experienced the slowdown but not the graphical glitch. Does anyone else think they might be two completely seperate issues?
It looks like we'll have to make the new graphics engine an option as it's going to be unlikely that we'll be able to figure out precisely why some people are having graphical glitches with it. So users will ahve the choice between the new engine and the existing engine. Eh, I guess I'll just play when I can afford to upgrade my PC then. Thanks for working on it, though.
Cry some more?
I'm going to edit my original post too, but could those of you having issues with memory, slowdown or graphical glitches please try this build and let us know if it helps? Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have improved performance for me at all. Still getting single-digit framerates whenever there are ships on-screen.
Fair enough. I'll just say it again: programming is very tricky. "Easier said than done" applies more to programming than almost anything else.
But Stormbringer, "beta" is a testing phase. Once this phase is over, the developers will release an official, stable update. So just be patient, let the rest of us test the beta patches, and eventually you'll get what you want. What you described earlier, how every new beta patch fixes some issues and creates some more, is just how things are. Programming is tricky. You fix one bug, and inevitably another one will spring up. That's why the beta is necessary. So the develop
Stormbringer, these are beta patches for a reason. Nobody forced you to install them.
I'm one of the people actually getting slower performance since the latest patch. Single-digit framerates with 2 ships on the screen. It appears to be affected only by the ships; I get 60-70 frames per second with no ships present. I can't limit my favorites to just 7, unfortunately. StarCraft (they just announced the sequel last night, which makes me very happy) XCOM: UFO Defense Knights of the Old Republic World of Warcraft (say what you want about it, but crappy games don't get billions of subscribers) Allegiance Half-Life 1 and 2 TIE Fighter Sam & Max Hit the Road Deus Ex System Shock 2 As for worst... I can't say I've really played many games that truly sucked, sin
StarCraft 2 has just been announced in Korea. Updates from IGN: http://pc.ign.com/articles/788/788627p1.html I thought the day would never come. Holy crap.
