As an aside, how is it possible to make half your money from tourism? I've seen remarks about this before, and how supposedly tiny the benefits from trade are compared to tourism, but for me it's quite the opposite, and I've always had high influence. I assume this must require playing with settings like hugest galaxy possible, with, like, 15 habitable planets per star system or something?

For me, it seemed like the first, oh, half-dozen conquests got techs, and generally the highest , most lucrative, available. It may be that you *only* get the higher ones for some reason. I went through, oh, ten successful conquered worlds with no tech gains, and still didn't receive Basic Radioactive Colonization (acquired the Advanced tech in one of the earliest battles.)

I found the pirates to actually be the most fun bit of a fairly dull game, where I could have just allied with everybody to end the game, but wanted to fool around with inciting proxy wars against the leading Altarians and trying to mess with them without going to war. (Worked, but only to a limited extent.) The pirates shook things up, and finally gave my fleet some exercise. To my surprise, I was able to handle them without many losses, and even early on, I was able to cobble fleets

Is 1.59.078 the release which many people are calling "the beta," or is there some super-secret location where people are getting some *other* release? I would think that, if it shows up on Stardock, it's by definition an official release, NOT a beta, right? All it indicates is "new updates," but nothing about still being in testing.

Turn up AI aggression, it makes the whole diplomatic model a little less easy to exploit. That said yes, the diplo model in general (and alliances in particular) are ripe for abuse in general. Ah, thanks, I hadn't quite caught on to the aggression settings yet. Question: do these settings *only* affect how much the AI hates the human player, or will they annoy each other more too?

Is it just me, or is it too easy to form Alliances in the game - and thus to win the Alliance/Diplomatic victory? In each game I've played so far, just being peaceful and trading with everybody, and keeping a decent military while not being too aggressive seems to bring darn near everybody to "Close" relations sooner or later. I know there's a bit of skill involved in doing that, but it still strikes me as kind of easy and anticlimactic. And that the AIs don't seem to value "he might

I'm a little confused by the terms "Morale" and "Approval." Are they interchangeable? It seems like the game uses one or the other term randomly. Or are they different, but related? Loyalty, I think , is something else altogether - that's about how likely a planet is to "flip" to another side, I think. But is loyalty related to Morale/Approval?

One odd thing I discovered accidentally is that your own Mining ships, when on "automation," at least under some circumstances, know where the asteroids are even if you don't. After finishing up the belt near my homeworld, they set out to a grey area (fairly close in, but one I hadn't gotten around to exploring) and started mining its asteroid belt.

Those people aren't very bright, frankly, those things end up class 16 in no time. At high tech levels they're among the best planets in the game. Yeah, I had forgotten about the Class-1 in my game until quite late, and sent a colony ship to see what it'd do, and it turned out great! Granted, I had the super-duper-insta-terraforming galactic wonder, which helps, but even having to do it all "normally," it would've been a great planet that lat

Reply to Treaties in Dark Avatar

Alright, it appears that no one else has yet had a strong balk at the one-way aspect of the treaties. In hopes that at least one dev-type appreciates my quibble, I humble suggest that the UI text be changed from "X treaty" to "X Aid Agreement." This would make the label of the active UI element more accurately reflect the effects of the choices on the Diplo-Trade page. Yeah, it's definitely confusing at first, especially since every other game I

Yes, all capitals in the build queue can be completed. But every time you complete one, all capitals of that type get removed from all your planets' build queues. In other words: - if you don't have an economic capital and you capture a planet has one, you keep the one you captured but you can't build any more - if you don't have an economic capital and you capture a planet with an econ capital in the queue, you can complete it bu

Speaking of Capitals, I conquered a planet that had, IIRC, an Economic Capital in its build queue. I already had one of my own. Will that 2nd Capital get built if I leave the queue alone, or will something prevent that?

Just think of them as interstellar tugboats. Actually, I can buy that pretty easily, and I'll be sure to affix the appropriately gigantic Structure components on my unarmed Tiny vessels in the future....

I think the orbital fleet manager should be an upgrade for the starport, rather than a stand alone building. This actually makes alot of sense really. It would seem logical that coordination of orbital fleets would occur at the same location that they take off from in the first place. Much like an airport's flight control facilities. A starport would already be equipped with a certain amount of c

I don't agree that only cargo and large+ hulls should be allowed to use the various transport modules. A good example why would be to think of star wars and how there are a large number of various sized transports in that universe. Like the unstandard Millenium Falcon, to the trully Gigantic bulk freighters. That does make a fair amount of sense for Freighters (maybe the big ships are transporting, like, thousands of to

I didn't even realize until now that miniaturization could advance far enough to put the "cargo" type bits in a Tiny hull. Which seems more than a little unrealistic to me, but does open some interesting possibilities. (Personally, I'd probably just stipulate that Transport, Trade, Constructor, etc. can *only* go on a Cargo or Large+ hull.)

I'm kind of irritated with the way the game handles planetary defense. If one and only one (unless you waste a precious planet space on the relevant "fleeting" improvement) ship can defend per turn, it makes for boring combat: 1. Entire Fleet vs. Single Defender = Defender automatic loss (all else being equal, of course.) 2. But since that fleet has to go one by one, just cluttering up your planets' orbit with empty metal hulks seems a viable, but really really cheesy, defense stra

Playing my first games, I have a really hard time finding any justification for building Tiny-hull ships. When each is carrying the best equipment you can muster, a Small ship seems much better than a comparable Tiny (for one thing, a Small can usually squeeze in some defense, sensors, or another weapon, while Tiny ships tend to be strictly "a gun with an engine." Which would be OK if the Tiny ships cost, oh, maybe 25% what a Small does, but it seems more like the Tiny costs 60% or so.<

More random events related to alignment that actually MEAN something. Some of the events I get have really silly outcomes. Omg! I lose 145 BC! I have several thousand. In a choice between gaining 145 Bc and losing 250 Bc, it almost doesn't matter to me. And sometimes the amounts are, like, 10 Bc! I was actually thinking at first that it might mean "10 Bc PER TURN, FOREVER" or something - else why would the game bother?

I noticed some curiosities in my current game. It seems like every race has certain technologies on a trading verboten! list, but not necessarily the ones you'd expect (weapons, engines, "bad world colonization" techs.) And I don't think they're always the same ones for each race. The really weird ones were the Terrans, who were adamant in their absolute and total refusal to trade me... Alliance. Also (bug or feature?) it seemed to me that the Minor Races migh

There are a lot of good ideas about sensors here, but one problem I haven't seen mentioned: Why on earth does ship sensor range stack? In real life, it's not like putting a whole bunch of short-range radars in one place somehow turns them into a single thing with enormous range! I only just realized that sensors actually work this way in the game, and if I understand it correctly, you could just cram as many sensors of whatever tech level on a cargo ship hull to get much, much

What's the effect, exactly, of running at a deficit? I've noticed that, early on, my net might be, say, -50, and let's say my treasury is at 500. But it *stays* at 500 instead of dropping to 450. Obviously, it must be making up for the shortfall somehow, but I can't tell what it's doing. Slowing down production, perhaps?

QUITE WHINING! Obviously if your playing such a great game as Galciv and having lots of fun, then somthing happens to destroy that fun, your going to winge about it - that is perfectly reasonable! Yeah, this happened to me, and the event isn't necessarily "unbalanced" or "unfair," but it *is* something even worse - it's unFUN.

I've actually found it too easy to win without war so far, in two games at Normal. It seems like if you have a good economic/research strategy where you're attentive to trade and don't neglect your military, it's easy to have "Close" relations with everybody, even diametrically opposed alignments. I won my first game by pretty much just allying with every major power. Even the Drengin were "Close," but I decided to declare war and try out my big, shiny fleet before winning.... <br/
