Oh, where do I start? Micromanagement and strategy. This is a matter of race preference in StarCraft. As my nom-de-plume implies, I play Zerg, which is the most micro-management intensive of the StarCraft races. I find there are those who get "lazy" playing the Protoss, and just make an army and send it (carriers...). It is actually fun to show, often creating shear surprise, that due to some slick micromanagement with the Zerg, a lazily sent (and usually invincible) army will fall to the "hard

To match Thalan colony-spread requires any race you play to be creative with the ship builder to make cheap colony ships and pay attention to techs that allow military production advantages. I find that I tend to pay more attention to factory production, buying factories, and upgrading factories than other buildings early on. Getting as many colony ships out and exploring as quickly as possible and nabbing the best planets as quickly as possible. You might not be able to close the gap with the T

I must be missing something. I can obtain the tech for +24 defense for Starbases, but cannot seem to get even Battle Stations I for the Starbases. Any tech in the tree for more powerful starbase module weapons (including Battle Stations II, III, etc., or the individual weapon techs) can only be built if Battle Stations I is installed, otherwise, the modules for the other weapons techs do not even display. The problem then becomes that +24 defense or not, any ship can kill a Thalan starbase no

Ooops. You just said - military victory when isolated. Uhhh... rethink that! For sure you will want to maximize your planets' output by building economy starbases. Researching speed techs and getting your colony ships out to a star cluster quickly could also be very essential. You may need to hunker down (and even slow down ships outside your influence with military starbases equipped with modules to slow up ships) and limp along to a technological victory. Of course, influence starbase for the

What good does the special Thalan Starbase Tech do if you cannot use its defense plusses to defend starbases? Adding a +24 to all types of starbase defenses means NOTHING if you cannot even get a single type of attack tech for a starbase anywhere in the tech tree. [For those of you wondering what I am talking about, a starbase with attack of zero in all categories can have 150 defense in all categories, and still be destroyed by a 1 attack 0 defense 1 hit point ship.] IF this is an oversight,&nb

Now, let's be honest, JPowell. Did the Pirates really ONLY ATTACK YOU? The Pirate Event is not common, and has been around FOREVER. I have only seen it twice, and my play pattern has been the same as yours with the game. Read old threads. There are plenty of comments on the pirate event. THE PIRATE EVENT IS RARE. However, both times I have encountered the pirate event, pirates attacked everyone - not just me. The random element of the placement of pirates may not have strategically been to your

If you have 1.8g and then update to the latest GalCiv2 update, you will now be back to having the movement bug. I am going to make the registry change and attempt to get 1.8g to overwrite whatever the latest GalCiv2 update did to bring this bug back. --- I made the registry change to say that the current version was 1.8e, downloaded 1.8g, and then things were back to normal: just in case anyone comes across the same scenario I did...

Your challenge relates to your language of origin, since your first language is not English. How can I tell? There are a number of clues. This is not a criticism, but maybe I can help. In order: 1) The GalCiv games were all designed to be single player, not multiplayer. That the design and gameplay is so engrossing is a testiment to the skill with which they implemented the single player design. The depth would not have been present in a multiplayer game. The fact many, like you, want to preserv

Uranium-235. Just click on the "x" underneath the action items. They disappear, and there is only one click. When you do see an item that is useful (helps me on huge or massive maps to locate planets), then you can "use it" (click on it and it will locate the item of action if it is that type of message), and then "x" the rest. Simple, huh?

Be a diplomat, cause others to war (or just wait for them to do it by themselves), and when they kill each other's starbases, then assimilate them until you are a super-race. Whoever is left, just add the defense modules that best keep the starbases alive, plus adding all the attack modules. Then kill everyone. Why put your starbases up as clay pidgeons until necessary? <img src="http://images.sta

Hi, if you see this post first, scintor, then read my reply to your other post. I used to play without trade routes, but after using them, I found that they are definitely needed to keep pace with other races economies most of the time. Cost-benefit analysis? Whoever is the author of these cost-benefit analysis papers must be pretty dense (sorry if I offend anyone) because trade routes produce HUGE amounts of income compared to the cost. The only thing broken about the trade routes is that they

Scintor, one thing to keep in mind: If you establish trade routes to far away civilizations, and then build cheap constructors (after researching miniaturization, a tiny hull with only a constructor module is super cheap and quick to build) to make economy starbases along the route - only upgrading them with trade modules, then you will see that enourmous amounts of funds can be had with trade routes. The trade income can even outstrip your maximum tax income. Just one freighter further along in

There is something you should all consider, and that is the fact that the Minor Races all have a different AI than the Major Races, and with reason. Have you ever looked at the Influence Points of a Minor Race? Have you ever wondered WHY they have so much more influence than major races (including you)? The minor races are not engaged in influence like major races (no influence bubbles on the map), and are provided with enough influence to prevent being taken over by influence pressure. The Mega

KzintiPatriarch, don't shoot the messenger. I didn't say that I disapproved of Vuk using other races as food sources (although I do think he should use more spices - melange only gives one flavor). In fact, I am quite envious of his prowess. The only thing is - he doesn't share. We like delicacies, too. We think he should at least keep some breeding pens so we can have a taste - rather than eating these minor races into extinction. I was just relating that a secret meeting had been held, savvy?<

Roxlimn, you are making the mistake of assuming that I have not taken out some of the best players in the game (and I have). From your comments, I take your skill level is really not in the top echelons of the game, or you are making some gross assumptions about the maps. ----- As for GeneralEtrius, you make a thread asking if StarCraft is over-rated, and then attack when examples of the opinion of it "not" being over-rated are given. Just stating an opinion is not enough - you must provide subs

Thanks, CariElf. I have heard many strange opinions on this thread. The major point is that it IS NOT CLEAR that the current design should be called a bug. There is much to consider, many varied opinons, and many ways of looking at this issue. However, a decision needed to be made, and I for one think the final choices of how to implement the victory conditions for Diplomatic Victory made sense for a single player game. <a href="https://www.stardock.com/products/sdcentral/" title="Poste

You all have been mis-informed. The Terrans had discovered an ancient artifact made of Plot-Device-ium, and after activating it, their lead scientist's brain was instantly downloaded to each race's current version of ipod. They then simply read the Hyperdrive idea he had been working on from the text screens, and built their own Hyperdrives. The Terrans, being embarassed (and the ultimate diplomats), then claimed they had "shared" Hyperdrive. [But all us Drengin knew this story already, anyway,

True, Roxlimn, for common rushing techniques, their usefulness dies at a certain skill level. I was talking more about other types of tactics, such as 1) attacking with units under a massive number of Overlords so your units cannot be targeted, or 2) To kill the maximum carrier stack from a Protoss player: laying spore colonies 8-9 rows deep, using micromanagement to fire with both queens (webs) and defilers (plagues) and also to direct spore shots. Then sending in directed scourge at appropriat

A word on alliances (it's a treaty, too): 1) alliances are available only if both you and the other race have researched alliances, and 2) alliances are only available with other races that share your same alignment. Otherwise, there is no limit to the number of alliances you may have.

In Diplomacy circles on the Altarian planet, they were thinking of just saying "We hate your guts and are going to kill you now" - or even more appropriately "%$&k you!", but instead they thought it would be much more inflammatory and aggravating to accuse you of something you are obviously not doing - and then go to war with you over it! They wanted to make it as horrible for you as possible. It worked, didn't it! They then beheaded your envoys that came to explain that the war was all a mistak
