You may not be able to instigate a rebellion but you can aid your efforts in promoting one through the use of spies. You can use spies in combination with your influence (planetary, galactic resources, and starbases) by targeting leisure improvements.

There was two movies? The book is much better than the first movie. The sequel is unwatchable for me, but schlock tolerance varies widely--I can't watch Babylon 5, but I can stomach Stargate SG-1. Varies indeed. I never liked Stargate and found it much more "schlocky" than Bab5. To me, however, schlock implies camp, but Webster's declares it to mean "shoddy, of low quality
I would think, m'self, that the smaller ships should get a defensive bonus. Sure, they've got this Uber-Dreadnaught planet pulverizer, but its mega-weaponry is primarily designed to face other Uber-Dreadnaughts - nailing that pesky fighter should be like trying to use a cannon to swat a fly. I just like the underdogs, and would like to see the one-man fighters get a lil' perk
Buying freighters from Civ's is a handy trick although I use it less often. My last game another civ actually gave me one for an instant trade route, I was pleasantly surprised. What two planets make up a trade route if you buy the freighter? I wondered about that one too, like the time another Civ gave me a freighter. I'll have to double check it; it would suck
My own strategy (which is always being revised, heh) 1. Tech tree Xeno Research -> Stellar Cartography ->Sensors After that its (lately) the two military production techs (for shipbuilding), then a mix of diplo tech (including the Translator), economy, and engine techs. As soon as I get new propulsion techs I'll upgrade every ship I can, especially colonizers and constructors. 2. Surveyors I use the Abundant setting for anomalies, and the
To me it would seem that not only should the AI be smart enough to attempt to culture flip your planets, it should defend itself - culturally - when you attempt to do it, by placing "counter-culture" starbases to thwart yours, creating cultural improvements on planets, etc. That's what I do when I don't want an outright war with a race that starts plonking down Influence starbases; I put out my own. Depends on the AI setting I guess. I would think that at "Challenging" and above
I'm in the same skill range, Challenging to Tough. What makes all the difference for me is the race I play - and so far have only played - the Terrans. The other civilizations always have enough military might and advanced weaponry techs to turn me into ash throughout the game until the later stages when I finally come up to speed. It's all about Diplomacy + Military might. Early on, I monitor attitudes and when one starts to slip I either get that diplomacy tech or send that trade shi
I've found spies useful in varying degrees, depending on the stage of the game. From the beginning to mid-stages, when I'm lagging behind on the research curve, I spend them as soon as I obtain them. Most get neutralized with 3-4 turns of placement, but occasionally one seems to make a "breakthrough" and my espionage level on that race is upgraded. From the mid to later stages of the game, when stealing techs is not as vital, I stockpile them. Useful for counter-espionage (I've not use
Heartily agree with the Planet habitat/type being displayed either in the Civ manager screen, or on the planet list (or both!). Its a bit tedious going planet by planet and writing down what they are for future tech research or trading. It does seem, now, that since you often can't immediately reconvene diplomatic sessions with other races that popups or information concerning technology, that races stats, etc, should somehow be available . . . or links you can visit then return to the
Another minor bug here. Since there's as of yet no official bugthread I'll just add to this one. It involves the Yor but probably is not race specific. In my latest game, the Yor Flagship "parked" itself atop a galactic anomaly. It apparently didn't or can't survey it, as the anomaly persists, but it also refuses to move anywhere else. As a result my own Survey ships, on Auto-Survey, get "stuck" there too, trying to explore it while the Yor stubbornly just sit there blocking all efforts
I thought the animation (the "flash") was intentional, could be wrong. Like a spark of electricity (since they're sentient robots)
The first few games I played (DA 1.50) planet bonus tiles seemed pretty scarce to me also. I just started a new game and :
Hm, can't edit my earlier, so: its Asimov's Foundation series, not Federation, solly Another great book is David Brin's The Uplift War . There's others in that series, including Startide Rising , but they're not nearly as good. One of the newly-uplifted species in the book are chimps, and they're fun . More classics: Larry Niven's "Known Space" books. There's
I've been reading Sci Fi for a looong time , I can recommend more than a few "galactic empire" books: Peter F. Hamilton almost all of his books (the one's I've read) seem to deal with Galactic Empires Series: The Reality Dysfunction (really excellent read) Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained Fallen Dragon Series: The Damned by Alan Dean Foster (A Ca
If you've had heat related problems in the past it could certainly cause random reboots and, in particular, problems running games which dramatically increase the load on your graphics card. I had a problem when I installed a new Nvidia 6800GT AGP in an aging Gateway box. The computer actually ran fine until I ran graphics-intensive games. They increased the load on the board, which increased the heat, which randomly crashed my computer. I'd google for some kind of software b
Galactic Civilizations - Dark Avatar 1.50 Its the version I downloaded yesterday (09 Feb 2007). As I loaded up SDC an update was ready, so no idea if the bug is still present. This is a really minor bug, would have posted it to the Official DA bug thread but that doesn't exist (yet?) When viewing the Planetary Improvements screen (Planet screen?), and another planet flips (cultural takeover), the screen changes to reflect the captured planet's improvements, but the title
When you capture Capitals (Tech, Econ, Political, etc) from other civ's do they still work? (Or are you better off changing them?)
I use the "Cargo-hull" tactic for fast surveyors; they're also handy for upgrades to Constructors to quickly claim precious galactic resources, or freighters to establish trade routes. Another one I like is to plant warships right next to another civ's resource mines, then sell them to another civ they're currently at war with. Naturally I have a Constructor nearby Buying freighters from
I read in a post - somewhere - the motto, "Putting Warheads to Foreheads since . . . ." A friend and I (we're both ex-military) find this motto hilarious and are interested in the Metaempire that uses it, assuming one does. I tried searching for it, but I think the search engine only looks at titles, anyway, it came up blank. Who coined it? Anyone?
If you want it to be really bloodless, use Cultural Insurrection I've seen it flip homeworlds, although I wonder if they should be immune, given you can't flip Minor race worlds.
I'm always go for other techs in the beginning, I don't bother picking up the Translator until the 7th or 8th selection. Xeno Research -> Stellar Cartography -> Sensors Then upgrade all my cargo-hull based scouts to Survey vessels This aid me in both finding the plum of the habitable worlds out there, and the galactic anomalies ("abundant" setting). Then its propulsion techs. I do pick up the Translator along the line, as well as then going hot 'n' heavy aft
It's the Psionic versions of weaponry that are only available to the Evils
Yes , you have to have some kind of "minimum" military. Even your best galactic "buds" are going to start eyeing your worlds if you don't protect them. Take this with a grain of salt as I'm not one of the guru's - I just finished my 3rd game on the Tough setting. As it seems almost impossible to start out on an equal footing with the AI - they have so many more techs and research bonuses in the beginning than I do (Terrans) - I focus on Diplomacy, Trade, and Economics. I don't bo
