From what I've heard, evil civs get some pretty nice military bonuses, but they're more prone to get ganged up on by the other civs. Good civs get a defense bo.nus and have an easier time making alliances, plus it's easier for them to rally others to their cause should they be attacked. (This happened to me once, actually... I was playing as the Korath, and I decided to attack an ethically weak civ that was "good." The entire universe turned on me.) Yeah, that must be it. I find the whole instantaneous colonization thing a bit odd... "Okay, it took us seventeen weeks to reach this class 2 planet, now let's build a cit- whoa, wow, that was fast..." INSTANT COLONIES: Just add water!
If you can afford all those Nano Rippers and your enemy ships don't have one heck of an armor selection... They are really good weapons, but I find that weapon variation is generally the key to success. Especially missile weapons... they are bulky and take a long time to research, but I have seen relatively few missile defense systems on enemy ships compared to shields and armor.
I've been having this problem for... uh... well it seems like forever, but I haven't always had it. I once had something crazy like that happen. There was apparently a complicated system of alliances and there was a pretty big arms race going on between the Korath and the Iconians. Eventually a disgruntled miner from the Iso Congregation (custom race) shot the leader of the Korath, so the Korath delcared war.
