The only reason I wrestled through the campaign was getting the story. Just because my tactic to get through sucked on gameplay. i.e. get the planet required asap, don't spend a penny on any ship or building not required for this task. And yes I did play on normal difficulty Sandbox rules though !!!!

You could adapt it to designs that have ships with a certain experience. Like a hall of heroes.
