Updating the BIOS is not something to be done lightly. If something goes wrong, your motherboard can become permanently unuseable. It's not something I'd just just because a certain game is crashing. For one thing, it's unlikely to solve the problem. BIOS updates are usually released to support new hardware or low-level OS features.

Never found out what was causing the problem, but to get around it I made an iso image of the CD ( Link ) and then mounted the image in a virtual CD-ROM using Daemon Tools ( Link ). I'm experiencing this problem too. After playing for approximately 15 minutes the sound starts to stutter and then everything grinds to a halt. This does not seem to be connected to any action on my part, it can happen in the ship designer, colony screen, new tech researched screen, planetary invasion, or even just moving about the map.
