it says the developers are veterans of Homeworld and Ground Control That would explain the Homeworld-like graphics, which I have always loved. I think they're some of the best of any game I've seen.

You can't use the standard shortcut icon created by the game's installation (at least, I couldn't). I had to create a new shortcut and change IT'S properties to make the target work. I will say this though, some of the cheats are useful, but they can sometimes take the fun out of the game. You can become the most powerful race with just a few keystrokes.

Besides, why have a universal translator if there will be unintelligible language going on in the background?

Some of the space images seem to be reminiscent of HW2. I like that.

Personally, I just update them and save under new names, but I believe there are Star Trek ship mods out there somewhere. I know I've seen discussions about them.

Any idea what determines which race another race will surrender to? I very rarely get a conquered race to surrender to me (conquered by someone other than me, that is), but they sometimes have some valuable planets. So, I wonder how that is determined?

To conquer to your hearts content, do not deal the final blow. Once you have nearly destroyed them make peace, a bloodthirsty AI bully will finish the weak race off and take the bad guy rap. I did this to the Korx. I was irritated that they declared war on me for the second time, after I had gone through a lot of trouble taking back invaded pl

Has anyone found any actual advantage to adding the various sensor types to your starbases? I usually ignore them, but if they are worthwhile, then I will start putting them on my starbases. I just haven't seen that they do anything.

An example would be a river, rivers provide better access to trade and that's one the main reason's cities were always founded near them - and grew best near them. Natural trade bonuses tend to be simply places that make transportation easier/cheaper. You don't really get something like that for a spacefaring race in the same sense. At best if the game had stable wormholes

I've been playing this game for quite a while now, and I've realized that I've never seen a planetary bonus that directly affects economy. I've seen research, population, influence, manufacturing and morale bonuses, but have never seen an economy bonus on planet. Now you could argue that the food bonuses affect economy by increasing population, and therefore your tax base, but that is an indirect effect. If it's not in the game, maybe it's something we can add to the wish list.

Does anyone know whether or not the "extras" (jewelry pieces, I guess) that you use in designing way cool (or way uncool, depending on your mood) ships increases the build time, or is the build time only determined by the tech levels of the ship?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but it seems that the only resource I don't see an actual benefit from mining is the military resource. Does this actually help anything? Have you guys noticed a tangible benefit from this resource?

Well, I haven't really experienced any of those problems, so they didn't factor into my post. However, I think you're missing my point. My point is that everyone has AI's, everyone has UI's, every game of this genre has essentially the same core components. If they didn't, they'd either be in a different genre, or dead on the shelf. Yes, it's important to get through technical issues with the core components, but beyond that, what makes a person buy one game over another? It's the game's ab

Ok, so I see that if you zoom in on a planet, you can see the rotation and the cloud formations, etc. And I see that if you zoom in on a star, you can sometimes see swirling gases on the surface. Those are nice little touches. How about some more like solar flares on the stars, or lightning flashes in the clouds of the planets? Maybe small meteor impacts on the moons? Ooh, how about binary star systems or pulsars? Sometimes it's the small details that set a game apart.

Just curious if anyone knows how the game determines the value of a trade route in BC? It seems like if I initiate a trade route, it will bring in less credits than if a trade route is brought to me. Also, I established 4 trade routes in different directions and at different distances, yet they all had the same BC value.

Speaking as one of the 67%, I can say that I couldn't care less about multiplayer capability. I've just never gotten into that part of gaming, and have no desire to do so. I prefer to play with myself.

In the opening cienemtics (thats a hard word to spell) shows a Dread Lords (supposedly) as a huminoid with really scared skin Yes, cinematics is difficult, but apparently so are humanoid and scarred. I'm not sure that antidisestablishmentarianism is as difficult as triscadecaphobia is, though. <img src="http://images.stardock.c

Reply to Pirates! in Game Talk

I haven't seen any pirates since upgrading to v. 1.1, and yes, it is too bad (for them) they invest so heavily in beam weapons!

27 Replies 11,190 Views

When I first started playing Gal Civ II, I loathed the pirates because I was always overmatched in exceeding fashion. As I learned the game and began delving into creating my own ships, the matchups became more balanced. Eventually, I got to the point where I could create ships that would level any pirate fleet. Since upgrading to v. 1.1, I have not seen one pirate fleet. I had begun looking forward to meeting the pirates because it was a good way to test out my ship designs without going to

When advancing to the next level of espionage on a race, am I the only one who receives the progress report twice? I get a notice that I've achieved the next level of espionage. I click 'NEXT', the turn progresses, and then I get the achievement notice again. I guess it's not a big deal, but I just hate being told the same thing twice.

5 Replies 3,016 Views

I'm just wondering why I can't initiate espionage against minor races? Occasionally they have some good techs I'd like to steal, but I can't get espionage going against them. Am I missing something? I'm currently using one of the older betas, so maybe this has been addressed, but I didn't see a topic for it, and I thought it was strange, so here I am!

It doesn't hurt to be mining an influence resource, either. Last game I played, I had one influence resource, and the races were converting to me so quickly, it was almost embarrassing. Of course, I'm playing at a lower difficulty level right now, but it still seemed too easy that time. I've found it also helps to have a higher number of your own colonies. That seems to "supercharge" all your abilities (at least, it did for me).
