Yes, the experience gain seems a bit out of hand. Also, it seems to actually accelerate, or at least not slow down, as ships seem to gain hitpoints even faster as time goes on. Some kind of logarithmic curve would be a better fit.

Is an alliance with light blue a realistic possibility? You could win that way. If not, there's probably a few things you can do to give light-blue a headache trying to take over gray, green and yellow. That's the way I thought it worked, from reading the manual, but it's not the case (thank god!). All the fleet does is allow more of your ships to fight in the same combat. Imagine if you have tiny ships versus your enemy's huge ship. If all of your tiny ships had to attack one at a time, the huge would get one attack for each attack of yours.
