Still confused by the "combined" attack ratings in a fleet

Been playing the game for a while, still confused about the concept of the "fleet". I made the following assumption:
1) The attack ratings for anyship within a fleet is the "combined" attack ratings.
2) The defense ratings for anyship within a fleet is still its own individual defense ratings.

Are these assumptions correct?

That's the way I thought it worked, from reading the manual, but it's not the case (thank god!).

All the fleet does is allow more of your ships to fight in the same combat. Imagine if you have tiny ships versus your enemy's huge ship. If all of your tiny ships had to attack one at a time, the huge would get one attack for each attack of yours. Clearly, your tiny ships would be useless, as you would get one shot and maybe ding him a little, and then he would one-shot you in return. If you have 8 tiny ships, you only get 8 shots against the big ship.

In a fleet, with say 8 tiny ships attacking, you get 8 shots the first round. Even if he one-shots you, you get 7 shots the next round. Even if you lose the fight, your total number of shots is 8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1= 36, while he only gets 8.

But, your ships do shoot individually, so you need to individually be able to overcome his defences (at least a reasonable fraction of the time).

Not really. The combined stats are just to give you an idea of the strength of the fleet. Each ship still uses its individual attack and defense ratings in combat. The purpose of a fleet is to allow for more than one ship to attack/defend at the same time.

For example, if the enemy has a ship with a 6 attack, and my best ships have an attack of 4, one on one, my ships will lose, and I can only hope to win by sacrificing a ship or two to wear it down. If, however, I put two or three of those 4 attack ships in a fleet and have the fleet attack, then both of those ships will be beating on the 6 attack ship while the 6 attack ship attacks one of the ships in the fleet, and while it may be close, all other things equal, the fleet should win without losing a ship because it can kill the 6 attack ship faster.
