The only problem with multiple alliances is someone will go to war and then insist you either help them or drop the alliance (taking a hit in reputation). Of course, you can just avoid those nasty, entangling alliances.

Charles, We understand the mechanics of why the population bottoms out but I think allowing 1 agent to essentially "kill" 3b population that easily is too easy. Especially since the chance of getting caught in 1 turn is much lower (hop the same spy around turn after turn, reducing all planets to ~6b, crushing their economy, making them easier to invade, reducing their overall influence and I'm sure there's more effects. Of course, you will, oddly enough, increase their morale). <b

Re: Environmental research & Trading That'd be cool if you couldn't trade them but I suspect it's a programming mess to do that. I suppose you could up their "perceived trade value" way up high so they wouldn't give it up, but then you'd have to be careful so they wouldn't give the farm away when you offered it. One thing I found last night, is it possible that you get at least 50% ability when someone surrenders and gives you a planet? I can see you not automagically gettin

Well written post, I agree with most of your points. The Pirate mega event needs tweaking, right now it's a little bit too much. Quite literally, they shut down the entire game I played last night. 2 races went under and surrendered to other races because the total collapse of their economy (low taxes / higher income from trading event also going on). The entire game came to a stand-still, I had to cut spending down to 15% just to cut my bleeding (and this is after my entire military

Ok Kryo, how about an option to tell the AIs 'If you don't aid me in this war you're going to have to drop the alliance' like they always tell me. Stupid $^%Q^!! Terrans are trading with everyone and their brothers while the entire rest of the galaxy declares war on me.

You no longer collect intelligence like you do in "vanilla" GC2. Instead you only gain intelligence on a race if you have a spy on their planet(s). Therefore there is a benefit from leaving a spy on someone's planet for a long period of time. It gets mean when people start mass-targetting the same type of building. If you think your opponent is low on cash you can target their economic capitol and all their stock markets, for example, crippling their economy until they can remove tho

I believe it is fixed in DA though, so yea, that will make small hulled ships pretty obselete. In DA you can still get effective use out of tiny and small ships but you have to think about it first. The logistics of the larger ships are getting changed to accomidate the changes. Personally I've always built "supply fleets" of the small

Higher speed on freighters is only usefull to decrease the time it takes before it reaches it's target when you're trying to establish the trade route. I stock my freighters up with Sensors, that way while they're doing their little shuffle between planets they're also illuminating parts of the map. Once the trade route is established the ship icon only moves at 1 / turn. This doesn't mean the value of the trade route is diminished, it's just a game mechanic. The trade route generate

You guys are all wrong. Didn't you see my post? Even Kyro's battle simulator gives 88% chance of victory for his ships. Yes, I saw your post, and while I haven't crunched the numbers in detail I know the math well enough to get round numbers in my head. 5 attack vs a defense of 4 (shield) and 4.x (sq rt of 18 Pt Defense)

While on the subject of spies in DA... Has anyone found an easy way to know what your current intelligence level against a target it? I always forget which race I've been able to keep a spy on the longest, how much intelligence I've collected and haven't found a setting for a simple way to know my level.

I agree with everyone else, you should of lost. Now if this had been in DA, you most likely still would of lost but you would of done much more damage due to degrading defenses in combat.

Also, the AI leaders were really individuals, with their own personalities and ways of acting. GalCiv actually has a strong, interesting backstory, but personally, the campaign just isn't worth playing through to get the story. Also, the AIs seem to pick standard patterns of behaviour that are available to all of them, so they may be very different from game to game, but f

I haven't had time to study all the replies in this thread but I have one question. Are 'non-optimal' defenses degraded when hit by a weapon not geared for them? E.G. Ship A has beam weapons Ship B has 4 points of Armor Therefore Ship B has 2 points (square root of 4) of defense, but will that defense ever be degraded from laser fire or would only rail guns degrade it. It's not clear in the original example. If that is the case, then for relatively low w

There's one minor inconsistancy in the UI that has bugged me and I was hoping you'd give it a look while fixing everything else for DA. When you click inside a text box, sometimes typing will clear out the old text, sometimes it'll just start typing where you've clicked. For example if you want to give a bribe of cash to an alien race it starts with 100 but if you just click there and start typing numbers, the 100 will go away. Compare that to ship creation, both the Ship Name

When your computer suddenly stops and reboots, there's 3 most likely reasons. Memory failure Run the memory test that CariElf linked Power supply failure Either it's insufficient, failing or there could be a connection burning out somewhere. Under normal load it is fine but under heavy load it cannot bear the full current and this causes the power supply to shut down for safety reasons. Overheating Motherboard may have auto-shutoff enabled. A prob

I'm not too proud to admit it, the very first encounter I had with GC (before the Altarian expansion) was a pirated copy, I think I was able to wait 24 hours before I bought my copy. I pre-ordered AP and GC2 and as soon as I can I'll be on the DA pre-order as well. Someone in this thread said it right, respect the gamers and they'll respect you.

Keep working on the drivers problem, that may fix the problem. If that doesn't your next most likely cause is power supply. Any time you have a computer spontaniously crash and immediately reboot the problem is poor power supply 99% of the time. Buy a high-quality PS (shell out the extra 60 bucks to get a good one) and that should solve your crash. Now I don't know much about laptops, others will be able to answer better than me, but as far as desktop systems you don't wa

Another bug, I'm not finding it posted yet. I'm using Logitech wireless keyboard and moues combo, I need to use 'hardware mouse' option. Frequently while playing the mouse will stop responding. Well, actually not quite, instead the *cursor* will lock in place but it's clear that the game is still reading what the mouse is doing. If I move the mouse around various items will highlight meaning that it's recognizing the mouse is moving over it, but the pointer stays locked

There's a lot to read here, forgive me if I missed it already but I tried searching. Playing 1.2, beta 1 and random races, I just met Custom Race.

After updating to official 1.1 patch I notice the IV upgrades of engines are still smaller than the V upgrades. This is true for both Warp drives as well as Impulse drives, haven't researched the last engine line enough to confirm. This bug has been around for a while.

Not trying to tell you how to play the game but I'll explain why this is happening and what you can do about it. The more population on a planet, the lower the base morale. The two biggest factors in lowering morale are taxes and population, if only one of your planets is having morale problems, it's probably the population. The reason why Boogie asked if any farms were on 'food production bonus' tiles is that farm would be boosting the population by at least double, therefore pushi

Eh, what time is it? Jumping Jehosafat! 7am! Uhm, is it possible to get an alarm clock added to the game? That is one good thing that MOO3 thought up.
