BETA 5: Notes and Bugs

BETA 5: Notes and Bugs

Put them in here.

Beta 5 is the last major public beta of Galactic Civilizations II.  We will have a minor update on Monday to fix a problem discovered with nVidia cards (crashes on start for them).

Some of the highlights of the new version include:

+ You can set the resoluton from within the game (which is what we think causes the problem on nVidia cards).

+ The Miles Sound System is now in replacing our own home made sound system.  However: If you had a previous version installed, your sound and such will not be set right, you'll need to go to options and turn up the sound since it uses a totally different volume control system.

+ It's been optimized for performance. So it should be faster than previous versions.

+ It should use less memory.

+ The human colony ship has a high-resolution texture. We want to see how this performs for people as it's 8 times larger than the typical "high res" texture you have in other games.

+ The planet screen has been re-designed. We don't have all the icons and graphics in yet but the basic layout is there.

+ The Invasion screen is much closer to completion now.

+ Lots of gameplay tweaks.

+ ALL your settings are now kept in \my documents\my games\galciv2

+ There is a lot more "jewelry" in the game for customizing ships including the ability to rotate the stuff.

+ A lot of stuff was done with custom races to make it more seamless.

+ Computer AI is smarter about ship design and what ships it builds.

+ Ethical Alignment choice bonuses are now working.

+ Tons of bug fixes.

Also, this beta marks the end to new beta testers being able to join.  Users who pre-order (regardless from where) will get the Collector's Edition version of the game which has additional content.

Well, that explains a LOT. I just had the typical game start where in the first month or two, 6-10 colony ships from a minor race come tearing through my space, ignoring inhabitable planets, both in my space and theirs. I thought to click on them to see just how far they were going to go, and it turns out, their own home world wasn't providing a location for them to range from. Instead, multiple something else's off to the galactic north that I haven't explored yet were providing range, and all the colony ships were heading that way.

UPC event on a Starbase tax - "What perminent starbase tax should be enforced?" "perminent" is mis-spelled.

1. In Build ship/Ship Types window an basic support module appeared instead of colony ship. When I clicked on it the shipyard started building colony ship.
2. In several ocassions when other races tried to get some money from me insted of amount shown as number I'd get '[cash value]'

The united planets resolution of galatic peace is broke. The miner races don't have peace included, with the web of alliances that brings the galaxy straight back to war next turn.

still having the occasional load where the ship (usually prefab constructor/freighter) icon is loaded in 2d not 3d (if that makes sense) ie unwrapped. used to occasionally happen with planets too. still also occasionally getting a missing ship icon in the blue square that is lodged in the starport screen and planet view

PM 1GHZ, 512MB, Intel Extreme 2 (64MB Shared), DirectX9c

The Yor invaded one of my planets with an invasion tech (can't remember which one) that destroyed one improvement on the planet. When I retook the planet the Starport was gone, and there is no way to build one, it doesn't appear on the improvements list. I know this was reported on a previous beta, just want to let everyone know that it's still a problem.

There is what looks to be a button next to the mini-map zoom buttons that, when clicked, pops up a message box saying that it isn't implemented yet and that it's ObjectID is being written out to the debug file.

It might be preferable to just have nothing happen when it's clicked.

This texture looks great - better than great actually.

War decleration exploit. The advanced forms of government you need senate votes.Just lower to tax rate to zero declare war and just raise it back again in the same turn.

The drengin empire voted themselves to pay 2% of their economy to the other races in the unitedplanets? evil?

I pick Technologist as a party. It defaulted back to Federalist in game.

This is a bug that showed up one or two beta releases past and is still present. No matter what the race or what political party you pick during setup, when the game starts you are "Federalist".

The A.I has been building resource starbases with no resource in them, totally empty

The A.I builds to many transports and constructors when getting annihilated in war.The Yor(A.I) only had 15 ship to defend their whole empire, i had 100 ships! but the Yor kept sending out dozens of unescorted transports and constructors in suicide advances into my empire, wasting valuable resources in folly for the A.I's economy.

The A.I needs to prioritize fleet's much more! still getting 1ship suicide attacks way to often for my liking and transports need support, the amount of unescorted transports i have destroyed in test games is ridiculous .The A.I also needs to build sensor ships behind the front line, like the us(humans) do.The A.I puts no money into espionage either.

The A.I is good at building economy, but the strategic side is very dumb.I was playing intelligent setting btw.

edit: The A.I did suprise me in the long war with the Yor.I was winning the war easy due to my high shield tech vs the Yor's Beam. The Yor did change tactics and built missile ships that causing some reversals for a while, that caused me to change tactics to counter.I thought that was pretty cool fun.

If it's like I found, then it starts you with the party you selected last time, with Federalist as the first iteration.

Ashbery76, what intelligence level of the AI are you playing? I've seen one of the AI (don't remember which one) on "Normal" build a fleet with 2 small attack ships to protect a transport.

It seems this is fixed now.

I attacked minifreighters on a trade route. Now there's a "phantom" minifreighter on the route, that displays on the map but cannot be attacked and does nothing if you click on it. I suspect the trade route has been terminated (too risky etc) but the game is still displaying the route and the minifreighter. I'll send a screen shot and saved game to gc2bugs.

Sereral of the Cultural Influence SB Modules are missing. The ones that come with the Techs Historical Assimilation and Cultural Conquest.

Another plug for the disappearing planets. They came back after an autosave.

Colony Ship and Constructor have blurred icons (I haven't seen this posted recently so it may just be my graphics card dosen't do well with the images.

Seems the AI are a good bit harder to Culture flip now (good thing?). Once they finally did flip they did not have reeducation centers.

For UP issues. Would be nice to see total votes for each option.
