BETA 5: Notes and Bugs

BETA 5: Notes and Bugs

Put them in here.

Beta 5 is the last major public beta of Galactic Civilizations II.  We will have a minor update on Monday to fix a problem discovered with nVidia cards (crashes on start for them).

Some of the highlights of the new version include:

+ You can set the resoluton from within the game (which is what we think causes the problem on nVidia cards).

+ The Miles Sound System is now in replacing our own home made sound system.  However: If you had a previous version installed, your sound and such will not be set right, you'll need to go to options and turn up the sound since it uses a totally different volume control system.

+ It's been optimized for performance. So it should be faster than previous versions.

+ It should use less memory.

+ The human colony ship has a high-resolution texture. We want to see how this performs for people as it's 8 times larger than the typical "high res" texture you have in other games.

+ The planet screen has been re-designed. We don't have all the icons and graphics in yet but the basic layout is there.

+ The Invasion screen is much closer to completion now.

+ Lots of gameplay tweaks.

+ ALL your settings are now kept in \my documents\my games\galciv2

+ There is a lot more "jewelry" in the game for customizing ships including the ability to rotate the stuff.

+ A lot of stuff was done with custom races to make it more seamless.

+ Computer AI is smarter about ship design and what ships it builds.

+ Ethical Alignment choice bonuses are now working.

+ Tons of bug fixes.

Also, this beta marks the end to new beta testers being able to join.  Users who pre-order (regardless from where) will get the Collector's Edition version of the game which has additional content.

Leader name resets to default in game after changing it during set up.

It appears that the Beta4 bug where a fleet attack that increased experience levels also reset the move points is fixed. I guess I'll have to research the engine techs now.

Just got an odd CTD. I haven't gotten the "Endless turn" bug before (turn button depresses, and never comes back), so I thought this might be it. I pressed the turn button, AI ships move. A pirate ship comes up to one of my starbases and is about to attack when everything stops.

I'm not sure how the Endless Turn bug usually ends, but in my case, it was a CTD as my system ran out of pagefile. 2 gig in ~2-3 min.

I sent a screenshot to gc2bugs showing a Drath ship at the intersection of the grid lines instead of inside them.

this bug has existed in 4C, 4D, and 5:
had alot of ships that were destroyed in fleet combat but the area their scanners observed were still visible, even after saving, quitting, and reloading.

also had the planet disappearing bug:

x800xt pe, playing on primary monitor.... couldn't see whether the in game anti-aliasing was having any effect between off and 6x, so i switched from "application preference" to 6xAA via the ATi control panel.... main monitor with gc2 went black, music still playing, second monitor was fine throughout. clicking second monitor brought up taskbar on main monitor like normal, changing AA via ATi control panel back to "application preference" main monitor stayed black for about 20 secs while clicking all over the place. when video finally came back several planets were invisible. icons there but no planets. everything back to normal after save, quit, load.

On the first turn, if you try to upgrade your colony ship to himself, you need to pay BC, even if no turn are required.

I have a saved game in which the Explorer class ship has just notified me that it has ran out of anomalies in its area and has therefore dropped out of its search. From this moment on, no matter what I do in the game, even if I delete the ship, the end turn button sticks and the came can't move forward. Also in this game the cash sliders in trade seem to be borked. If you want the saved game let me know.

several planets have disappeard. its invisible. the little orange hammer button is still there and i can still select it but its gone. does not show up on zoomed out strategic mode either.

This seems to happen when minimizing (from full screen) the game and back to it (well for me anyway).

Also, the spin to fast bug (ships roting like crazy) is still here;

Athlon X2 4400, GeForce 7800GTX, Windows XP 64bit, and Windows XP Pro 32bit

Im getting some pretty unpleasant freezes during what seems end turn processing. The game locks up (either with or without cursor control, I have had both), there is no HD activity. Sometimes the 'saving game' message is hung on the screen, other times I am guessing its locked up at the end turn.

Ending out of the frozen program leaves my machine in a quite unstable state and usually requires a clean system restart.

[]Belay that! just noticed 80a[b] is up, these comments were based on 80[b]. will see if it still happens and come back

The problem that someone (Lucky Jack? Proud Candian? can't remember) reported on several previous betas is still here in Beta 5 - on the first turn after loading a game no progress is made on research, military or social production. Techs, ships, and improvements that have 1 week to completion after reloading the game take 2 turns to complete.

I spoke too hastily. After saving my game and then reloading it this morning, the bug appeared again. I'm quite sure it wasn't happening before the save, but now it is.

Hello all! Although I've been part of the Beta for a while, I just started having the time to muck about a bit, and please forgive me if this post recovers some ground:

1. CTD problem.

I load a saved game. Click on an enemy planet, click on the "report", then click on the "Stats" tab. The game immediately CTD. Also, when you first enter the report screen, no data/info is displayed.

The interesting part here is that if you click on the enemy planet, click on report, then instead of going straight to the stats tab, if you click on any other tab first, the data/info displays properly and then you can click on the "Stats" tab.

2. On the planet management screen: it would be nice if when you clicked on an open district that has a bonus (e.g. manufacturing) if it would highlight somehow all the improvements you could build that would benefit from that bonus. Right now, the text on your improvements doesn't necessarily indicated which ones build culture/manufacturing/etc.

Been playing on a small map with 9 enemies; at 1600x1200 resolution.

I would like to second DeadEyeDick's 2nd item. Excellant idea.

The alliance system needs looking at.The A.I keeps making peace only to instantly declare war again because of their alliance treaty.Only the alliance leader should make peace and all wars in that alliance should stop at once.

Or there should be enforced peace for 20 turns when a peace treaty is made.

edit.Oh and the game friggen rocks.MOO r.i.p

I jumped from 900gc in credit to around -3,500gc after one turn. After that with +500 per turn it didn't decrease. Seems like it may be worth a look at this calc.

Alliances are definately not right. The Altarians (erm name right?) delare war EVERY turn with me cos' they ae allied with the Drengen who I have a long WW! type battle with. Every time they declare war, I talk to them, offer peace and they accept! one or two turns later, they declare war again! Can't be good for their economy can it?

I just started a game as the Humans, and Earth had no colony on it. Lots of nice bonus tiles, but no colony. Sent a screen shot and saved game to gc2bugs.

Started another game as the humans and this time, while Earth had a colony on it, the shipyard list of available ships to build had a lot of alien ships on it, but no human colony ship. Sent another screen shot to gc2bugs.

On my latest new game, on the very first turn I was presented with an announcement that my spies, with the Alexians, had stolen all of the Yor's technologies and were willing to trade them. Of course I had yet to meet either the Alexians or the Yor. Seems like that event should be limited to later in the game.

Why is there beams, missile, mass drivers tabs on the defence part of the ship design screen?.

The ground invasion messed up.It only showed the enemys forces, while my side was not on the map, only strange massive fire effects showed up on the screen from my side.

And what is that strange new graphic on the invasion screen.Looks like towers lobbing things out of them?

I just got a UPC event where the Yor were accused of exploiting native races, and the vote was to penalize them 7% of their income for the next year, to be paid to the other races. Two points: (1) the vote said "Should [OtherLeaderName] be held financially responcable" - Note the OtherLeaderName and the mis-spelling of "responsible", and (2) the Yor voted FOR this resolution, voting to penalize themselves 7%.

Some interesting "bugs" in the current version that I have seen before.

1. I get messages saying that one or more of my fleets if continued to move in the current direction will cause the Drengin to declare war on some other alien. I have no fleets. If I say continue, then indded you see a battle of the Drengin being attaced by the alien and when checking, the Drengin and I are at war. So, a mix up of who is who in the system.

3. Planets with more than one space port when I acquired them from an alien

3. Random dramatic movement of the influence lines on the map for no apparent reason. In one instance I lost over have my territory but the chart still showed me as the most influential. Any where from 20-50 moves later the lines move back to where they should be. Appears to be some sort of miscalculation in a recalc of influence.

Random CTD. Current one has the report below.
