i remember when i was perhaps an adolescent and "bitch" finally became an acceptable word for network TV.

and just to give you a sense of how far some people take their linguistic prudishness, they won't even tolerate proxy swear words, i.e. seth's shnikies, or any word used in an expletive way. saying "oh fudge!" isn't okay, they say, because you're still using the vulgar word mentally.

even more amusing is that there's nothing traditionally sacrosanct about not using vulgar words; even the bible uses some of them. traditionally, vulgarity is disparaged due to class differences. among a set of meanings, one strong valence of the word 'vulgar' is more or less the same as 'low-brow.'
