MVL Round 4 Draft and Discussion

MVL Round 4 Draft and Discussion

Lets move on with what is sure to be the best round yet!!!

Hi guys,

Just thought we would move all round 4 discussions here, so no need to troll across three or four threads to find out whats going on.

For those that do not know we are going to have a draft this round. The five teams will get two (2) draft picks each, and beyond that i will randomly place the rest of the teams as i did prior to round 1.

The draft will take place in reverse order of the league ladder,

Team E
Team A
Team B
Team D
Team C

The only players not included in the draft is the 5 captains, as they will do the picking of players. That being said i need to appoint a captain to team e, and since this was discussed i will delay no further.

Silverbeacher is the captain of team e.

The team captains are,

Team A = Dethadder (2nd)
Team B = MarshallOneill (3rd)
Team C = Firebender (5th)
Team D = Kzinti (4th)
Team E = Silverbeacher (1st)

These players are exempt from the draft.

So if we can get on with it, Silver make your first draft pick, then follow on in order guys. I will record the teams as we go.

The players are,

Pndrev
Piznit
Dethadder C
Ferrel
Dystopic
Neilo
TGE
Ghostwes
MarshallOneill C
Vilgan
Noctilucus
Playjeff45
Mumblefratz Team A
The Butterfly
Firebender C
Silverbeacher C
Brezelius
Mottikhan Team E
Shadow Worrior
Elwood011
Kzinti C
Drengin Team B
Doombringer
CornhuskerMac
Bluntblade

Once the draft is complete and the teams assigned, i will update this OP with the new teams, also once draft is complete continue on with out discussions here please, it will so much easier than having to check 3 threads.

Thanks guys, i really believe that round 4 will be (mind the cliche) bigger and better than the others!!!!

The Commish.

Guys, my home pc seems to be fried. Sad thing is, I had already completed a game for this round (albeit with a mediocre score). Not sure how long it will take me to have this problem resolved...

... I'd just as soon leave the level someone plays at up to the person. I think it would become noticable if someone were to intenionally play beneath their level and it could be dealt with at the time.

Seem to have overlooked this post for 2 days... I would agree to leave the difficulty level to everyone's discretion.
After all when you notice you're wiping the galaxy with the AI on a certain level, you will logically try a harder one to boost your score?

Yup...and in my last two games trying my hand at painful on the round 4 settings...i was soon slammed back down too.....

Too small of a galaxy for me style of play....

That throws me off too, as well as the very fast tech rate. It's definitely interesting to try something different though.

Actually playing at a higher level is a very small benefit to your score, not sure exactly what it is though. I think playing at a higher level is probably more of an ego thing.

I had mentioned that when I first played these smaller games at suicidal I found that the smaller galaxy was a bit more difficult. I was slightly tempted to lower my difficulty to compensate but I'm glad I didn't.

I think a smaller game is a little more difficult than a larger game but I think the bigger issue is more that the smaller game requires a different style of play. These differences can work both ways. Yes there are things that work on large galaxies that don't work as well on smaller galaxies. However, in my last league game I successfully rushed to Planetary Invasion and took out the largest AI before he had any defensive ships at all. This worked very well in the small galaxy but I've never been able to do it in a larger galaxy.

another spot-on summation. i did the same thing with that 1-year non-submission. i pretty much skipped what would normally be my first social development phase and went right for invasion and some basic weapons. picking bonuses is also more difficult, i find. the usual econ-related bonuses for example don't mean quite as much as they do on the big maps, IMO, and i find myself picking bonuses i wouldn't on a big map (production and speed especially). a number of the monumnets are less significant (for example, i'd prefer the tile to the orbital terraformer on a smaller map).

Probably it just worked for me because it pushed me to do a bit better/faster than usual (moved up from Normal to Challenging and Painful difficulty, resulting in some 10-20% higher scores) as I don't have any idea either what the score multiplier is for the different difficulty levels.

I feel quite the opposite. The gigantic is very unfamilier. I am not used to managing a 173 planet empire.
Then we need to talk, because managing a 173 planet empire is easy enough, get's harder when you have 600+ but i find that easier to do than manage a 5..8..or 10 planet empire..

And i must say, getting good relations on a small galaxy is harder than i thought. I just completed a second league game (first one submitted though, to mv not mvl) and i was only able to manage a 6 year 5500 win.....i can do a gig/abundant DA conquest in 7!!!

Go figure!
Making friends is harder then killing them I suppose. A 5 planet empire can blossom into something surreal if you can make it. I can kill suicidal with just my Home star system in tiny. Go figure!

Emergency over. Sorry I made a fuss, but it was not without reason (RL).
Fortunately, it didn't take as long as I thought it would. But I wanted to be on the safe side.
I haven't read up the 200 or so posts concerning the MV league that were made since my departure.
So I will simplay ask the questions that are relevant:
1. Am I still on team D? Is there a password for team D for any private team forum?
2. If I am still on a team: Does my captain still want me to submit a game or have you made sifferent arrangements. If you have do NOT change them back because of me. It would only engender debate and confusion. I am willing to wait for round 5, but I am ready to do what I was drafted into my team for, too - especially if you haven't found a way around my absence.

Two general points (better discussed in the rulebook):
1. Do we have clear rules for absences? When do you have to say you are absent (we've discussed this, but I couldn't find a conclusive statement our debate resulted in).
2. There seems to be a dev-created MV league/tournament thing for TA? Is it a danger for our league?
Welcome back! If someone had joined the league in your departure then there would be a bit of complication but fortuantly for you, there wasn't.

I don't think so. Even if you are currently playing the beta its easy enough to spend an hour on a small galaxy for the league. Of course, people would feel discouraged to join the league with the tournament feature up but existing players are loyal enough, I suppose.
Depending on the final setup of the tournaments I think we could possibly use it for the league. If you can create a scenario to use as a tourney, that could be that months game, but I'm just not sure if you can set them up where only the league players would be able to submit to it or not. It would also remove all the little variables that are currently on the honor system if everyone just downloaded the same scenario and played it. We'll have to see how it fleshes out.

I think we have greater concerns at the moment than the MV tourney's killing us. I am worried about the lack of activity from other players across our threads for this round. I fear that at the end of this round we will have the most amount of non-submitals we have ever seen. Shame, 'cause this round is where we really got everything together too.

Time will tell.

Hey! Welcome back Butterfly! Glad everything worked out well for you, good to see you back.

I understand your concern, it has been a little quiet, but then again somebody had to go and release an expansion beta or something   . That could be cutting into peoples time, but hopefully everyone will make there league game. We still have plenty of time left(which is good, since I have yet to get mine done).

i dunno about this. i haven't heard from everyone on the new team C, but we've completed at least a few games. i think (hope) it's just that people are feeling out their new teams (and need some new grudges before they start trash talking their old team mates!)
i have no such qualms about trashing my former mates! PlayJeff you drink wussy beer! FireBender, you should learn to bow down to your superiors! butterfly, dont let me catch you and pin you for my collection.

What are the similarities between American Beer and having sex in a Canoe?

Both Frakking near water

As for being quiet, I don't know. Team D forum is busier this round than the other 3 combined. Way for our team to pull together.

I think people may be more inclined at the moment to be playing, than talking about playing. And it is still relatively early in the round. Our Team D forum has been extremely lively as PlayJeff noted, so perhaps the other teams are talking in their own forums as well. I read any MVL thread every time there is a new post on one of them, but I dont feel the need to chime-in every single time.

I've been quiet but I'm about 1/2 way through a game. I love these smaller galaxies. There's no way I'd have time for a gigantic right now, given my RL situation.

Good luck to all, and I hope you aren't too disappointed when the Blade Runners come out victorious.

I'm hopeful that we won't see those non-submittals. The league is shaping up nicely and it would be great to see even more participation.

I'm thinking that this time of year might have something to do with the falloff in chat. Thanksgiving (my favorite holiday) is just around the corner and we'll have Christmas and New Year's shortly, too. I'd be willing to bet cold hard cash (yes, a nickle's on the table) that things will pick up after that.

I haven't started a game yet, but will be getting it in before the deadline. It'll be months before all of these boxes are unpacked and our furniture shopping is done.

Be evil!

I've completed one map on crippling and am presently trying to get a suicidal. The only suicidal I've ever completed was a DL Tech victory, so I'm challenging myself. Nothing much to say about getting my butt handed to me, but I'm here.
