MVL Round 3

MVL Round 3

"The Metaverse League"

Hi guys welcome to round 3 of the League. We have a few streamlining rules this round so be sure to check them out below. If of course we feel that there are not to our liking then we can change at the end of the round, but i think we are on top of most of the bugs now and things should go more smoothly. I will point out though that there is 1 rule that i will put in place this round that can be thrown out mid round.

"in the instance of a notified and accepted non-submital, not a "no show", in a 4 man team, a back up game will be allowed to be played be a fellow team member. That fellow team member will be randomally assigned by either myself or Firebender. A non submital with no explantion or prior notification will not be granted this privilage."

Ok here is the rule changes for round 3,

Team Bonus

Fastest team game time (average) 2 BP
2nd fastest team game time (average) 1 BP

Highest team score (average) 2 BP
2nd highest team score (average) 1 BP

Individual Bonus

For this round ( the different victory types),

1 BP for fastest and highest game per victory type.

No penalty's.

All ties, in both team and individual and in both speed and score categories, receive equal points.

Where's a score is dropped in any given team, that score, though no longer eligable for the MVL submission points are still eligable for any BP they may have achieved.

Averages are calculated from the totals of submitted games divided by number of members in the team. If a player gives advanced notice of his inability to submit a game then that player will not be counted as a member of the team for purposes of calculating averages.

I will before the end of this round post a new thread that will be the MVL Rule Book. Where these changes and the rest of the rules will be outlined, but do refram from posting in that thread please.

The teams as of round 3 are,

The A-Team (A)
Pndrev
Piznit
Dethadder
Xei Win Toh
Ferrel
Dystopic

The Blade Runners (B)
Neilo
TGE
Ghostwes
MarshallOneill
Vilgan
Noctilucus

Celestial Crusaders (C)
Playjeff45
Mumblefratz
The Butterfly
Firebender
Silverbeacher

The Domination of Death (D)
Brezelius
Mottikhan
Shadow Worrior
Elwood011
Kzinti

And now round 3, and Firebender this should make you happy.

Each team is required to submit a victory in each of the 4 different conditions. Your team captain will assign each player a victory condition to complete.

3 opponents on a Medium map.

Habitable Planets - common
Planets - abundant
Stars - rare
Anomolies - abundant
Asteroids - rare (DA)
Tech Rate - normal
Density - Lose clusters

Random minors
All victory conditions enabled
Allow Surrenders
Tech trading on
Super abilities off
Blind exploration off
Mega Events enabled

For team B, which has 5 players, the captain should assign his 4 team mates 4 different victorys and then play a game attempting a victory condition of his own choosing. Now we never really discussed what happens next but my proposal is that the two games that are the same, the captains choice and one of his players, these games could be combined and averaged to give us 1 game instead of two. Provided they are both victories. This is not in concrete but a suggestion.

The other way we could go is to leave it up to the team in question to decide which game to sumbit.

Either way have fun with round 3 guys and i hope these new rule changes work out well for us.

Good luck,

The Commissioner.

I just finished my game, but the Metaverse gives me an error (16) when trying to post it. This is with the 1.7 beta 1.

I just got the same error. Something to do with the update, I imagine.

I also accidentally chose my main character instead of Incitatus. Does this matter at all? The game still has the correct conditions. I guess if the game won't post it might not matter

I successfully posted a 1.7 game, but the Metaverse lists it as 1.61. However I did the upgrade after I started the map.

Can you post the details, too (or better: do a screenshot andf cut it nicely).

Is it that scary 25K game?

Correct. thebutterfly asked me to post the details, so I did. Sorry if I caused some confusion.

Btw, moving up in difficulty is never a bad idea. Once you play a few games and are sure that you can now beat the AI at that level. Its time to move up. I went from normal to challenging to tough and now I'm gonna move up to Painful. (I hope it doesn't hurt too much)

Looks like it was a bad idea for me, I'm getting killed 3 games out of 4 on challenging, while normal usually was a breeze
As soon as I took over 1 race, the remaining 2 declare war on me. And that while I have the same alignment as at least 1 of them. I guess it's back to the drawing board, trying to figure out how to get alliances sooner.

Not at all. I'll make a post on your behalf in the Sign up and roster thread.

You mentioned you won one game. Use what you learned in that game to master challenging and then move to tough. I'm telling you, the real fun begins at tough.

We already have a precedent for this. When FireBender started he was having "Error 12" issues and we allowed his submission with the posting of a screenshot of the game.

See post #55 of the "The Metaverse League" Results & League Ladder thread. Only the post of the victory screen is probably necessary, although it's a good idea to repeat the settings used, and other significant result details.

If anyone doesn't know how to post a screenshot then see the Posting Images - A How To... thread. Please hold off on posting the screenshot until you wish to submit the game to the League, it was clear that Ferrel's post above was not intended as an offical submission.

Moving up the difficulty levels myself. One thing for this particular problem is it can be a good idea to not take their final planet (right away) anyways for this reason. Just reduce them to one planet.. and park a garrison nearby to kill the occasional ship they manage to produce.

I think everyone sort of has their points where they have to learn/get better to regain mastery, and which difficulty levels they are can vary. Challenging was a bit of a jump for me, whereas (unlike Firebender) I barely noticed any difference on the step up to tough. It does make the game more fun as you move up.. but only once your pretty comfortable at your current level.

Try getting the last 2 civs to declare war on each other prior to killing off the first one.

I guess I want to post my first Metaverse game to the Metaverse League (round 3) for the DOD. It is an influence victory. How do I go about this? I did not have any success with trying to do a "screenshot" several months ago. I am not clear - If I submit a game, am I allowed to submit a higher scoring game later in the month to replace it? Is it "better" to not make an official submittal untill one has a chance to play a few games and then make an "officiall" submittal?

Also it would not acccept it on the metaverse - it said error #16 (I'm not sure what that means).

Let me know how I should proceed.

Thanks,

Brezelius

Let me know how I should proceed.

There have been a number of reported "Error #16" with the new v1.7 beta. This may get resolved but your best bet is to simply submit a screen shot which I'll describe for you. However, first let me answer your other questions. I'm not totally sure what of this you know or don't know so I'm going to describe this in baby steps.

Just to make sure you know, in order to submit a metaverse game you must have started the game as a metaverse game. To do this you need to be connected to the net and then hit the "metaverse" button on the main screen instead of the "new game" button. This will require that you log on to the metaverse and select your metaverse character. Once you've started the game you no longer need to be connected to the net you just play normally. When the game ends you will be taken to a screen to submit the game which will require that you be connected to the net and will also require you to log on to the metaverse again. In between the game start and end there is no need to be connected to the net.

If when the game ends you aren't on the net or the submittal fails for some reason it's usually no big deal. The game will automatically create a EndGame.sav file and place it in your My Documents/My Games/GalCiv2 directory. You can reload this game at any time and hit End Turn and you'll go through the endgame screens and submittal process again.

If you started the game by hitting "New Game" instead of "metaverse" then you won't be able to submit the game. If this is the problem that everyone else has been having with v1.7 causing an "Error 16" then you also probably won't be able to submit the game. In either of these cases your best bet is to submit a screenshot. To do this get to the endgame screen where it displays the final score and result. You use the "Print Scr" button on your keyboard which is usually right above the "Insert" key. This saves the screen to your clipboard. If you have multiple monitors you might want to use "Alt Print Scr" instead which only copies the active window. You then go into the Paint program (Start Menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Paint). Once there you can simply use ctrl-v to paste the clipboard into the new file (or use the Edit -> Paste menu). Then go to the "File" menu, select "Save As" and name the file and save it in either .JPG or .PNG format.

Now you can goto ImageShack. Browse to your saved file and press the "Host It". From there you'll be taken to a list of the image in five different formats. I find the easiest is the Direct Link to Image (the bottom one). Highlight this link, hit ctrl-c to copy it to your clipboard and open a browser to this thread and make a reply. Once in the reply editor hit the picture icon (you get a tootip for Insert image) and you get the insert image dialog box. Enter ctrl-v at this point and hit OK. This adds the link to your hosted image on ImageShack. The forum software will automatically resize the image and provide an expandable link for it. That's all there is to it.

As to your other question, Yes, metaverse games can be resubmitted at a later time if for example you work on it to get a better score and you can do this but you can only do this once. You can also submit as many games to the metaverse as you wish. However once you come onto this thread and post the details of the game that you are submitting to the league for this month then that's it, so be sure when you do this. The other thing is that it's far better to your teammates if you have to submit a loss or resignation than it is to simply not bother submitting anything. If you've never done any of this before it's actually quite a lot to do but once you've done it a time or two then it's very basic.

If you have any additional questions don't be afraid to ask. I know the first game I tried to submit to the metaverse I couldn't because I had just started it using "new game" so it wasn't until my second "metaverse" game that I actually realized how to do this. This is very common.

Well I guess I have my submission in early this time

Alignment: Pond Scum
Yeaers:6
Victory Type:Cultural Conquest
Score: 6800
Difficulty:Challenging
Map Size: Medium
v1.61 Dark Avatar (Dark Avatar)9/27/2007 5:16:25 PM

This one was a little more difficult, but I managed it in the end thanks to the fact that the Altarian Resistance decided to surrender to me after losing one single ship in a war against a Minor Civ

My captain, Marshall, has also done a Political Victory, and got a better score than I did (by a few thousand points, IIRC). I suggest simply taking his score so we can discard my error 16 game.

Also, I think Neilo mentioned that he might have trouble submitting his this round? If so, then team B will still need a military victory to complete the collection. If that's the case, I'll reinstall GalCiv2 sans 1.7 and play the round again.

Hmm, when does this round close anyway? I don't see it in the top post...

closes in Mid-October, around the 15th I think

also, i'm just curious over the whole 1.7 Beta testers out there. Don't get me wrong, i think the changes are awesome and needed, and I really hope they work out, just that its still has its bugs (obviously, from the failure to post issues) and I personally, am gonna wait before I install it. With that said, most of the MVL players are some of the most involved GCII individuals out there, so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that they DLed the 1.7 right away. And I'm kinda buzzed right now so I may not know what i'm talking about. Two 34ozers of Smithwick's will do that to you.
Yay, Smithwicks! Great beer that.

Yeah, the error 16 thing is rather irritating. I won't be playing any 1.7 games until it's resolved.
I decided to hold off on downloading 1.7 before I heard about any bugs. There are always bugs in a new program or version, so in my opinion it's generally a good idea to wait for fixes.

By convention (like a precedent only a slightly weaker) we've ended these in one month so this should end on midnight of October 17th (Note that midnight of the 18th is technically a month and a day). So any metaverse submission date of Oct 17 or earlier is valid. Of course you also have to post what game you're submitting in this thread for it to count.

assuming my roomie gets our internet reconnected today, i should be able to posta score tonight. i got a win by conquest, score of ~18,000, but i don't know if i should be aiming for a particular victory type or what (or even if i'm on a particular team, will hop over to the new player roster board presently).

Ha, another somewhat drinker. Exxxcccellent... And we're on the same team. I wonder if Mumble nips a little? I guess Scotch or Grand Marnier. And on a normal note, Good Score Dystopic, But its not enough
