the drinker's dive

a discussion about beers, wines, cocktails and other spirits

I know some of the conversationalists out there are drinkers, and some even have good taste in alcohol. I thought it'd be fun to have a thread for recommendations and discussion of beers, wines, cocktails, bars, and all that fun stuff.

Know any ways to spruce up boring beers? Want to mention your favorite microbrew? Looking for advice on how to pair wine with a meal? Bored of your standby cocktails? This is the place for you.

ps. I could use some advice as I'm not well versed in alcohol. I am thinking of making homemade "smoothies"

We've been making a killer summertime smoothie for a few years. Ice, frozen limeade, and gin, preferably Tanqueray but whatever. Play with it until you like the taste, but you get a frozen gin and tonic. Great for around the pool!

Thanks guys. I'll give both a shot. I've heard of Gin and Tanqueray, but what is a Pucker (a type, brand, etc)? Told you I'm new to this

I'm going for smoothies, as its kinda healthy (fruit!!) and its something that both I and my significant other can enjoy as she dislikes beer.

Pucker is a brand of drink... you ll find it in most grocery stores as well as any good specialty spirit peddler!

I liked 4 sister wines, They are a local NJ winery. But since I've moved, I've not tried a new wine.

I do enjoy guiness, epsecially since killian's is getting more watery. I'll admit that Mike's or Smirnoff can be pretty good (I have a huge sweet tooth), but expensive. Same thing with Bailey's, that only gets broken out for special occasions (when someone else is buying) cause I can't afford 20 bucks for a tiny bottle.

ps. I could use some advice as I'm not well versed in alcohol. I am thinking of making homemade "smoothies" (fresh fruit, ice; maybe milk, vanillia, and some spices) and would like to add some to it. A friend suggested "kaluha" but I'm not totally sure what it is (or how it tastes), I was thikning vodka, But I'm not sure if there is a better fitting alcohol.

Any suggestions?

Carolans is very similar to Baileys, only a little bit cheaper and as good.

Applejack is pretty good. Put the bottle in the freezer (it won't freeze), serve in a chilled or frozen shot glass. More like a sweet shooter than a liquor. Goes well with quite a few beers etc.

CAUTION: The effects are not really noticeable until you actually fall down. Use sparingly. It's made by freeze distillation. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applejack_%28beverage%29]

ha ha! my friend you've come to the right place. i used to work at a jamba juice, and every once in a while my coworkers and i would make special smoothies.

you'd think vodka would work, since vodka goes with everything. but take my advice: stick to rum or tequila (daquiris or margaritas). i wouldn't suggest kahlua or any alochol that's already very sugary. the thing is, when you mix the processed sugars in something like kahlua or triple sec with the natural sugars in fruit, it ends up tasting kind of, well, bad. that's my opinion anyway.

here are some of the recipies we liked:

mango margarita:
4-8 shots tequila
4-8 shots OJ (what portions depend on how strong you like your drink)
2 scoops lime sorbet
4 scoops IQF mangos
add crushed ice to produce the right consistency

berry daquiri
4-8 shots white rum
4-8 shots cranberry juice
2 scoops raspberry sorbet
3 scoops IQF strawberries
1 scoop IQF blueberries
(any mixed berries would probably do; add ice as before).

piƱa colada:
4-8 shots white rum
4-8 shots pineapple juice
2 scoops pineapple sherbert
2 scoops lime sherbert
1 scoop IQF bananas
2 TB dried coconuts

*IQF = internally quick frozen

be sure to use a high-quality blender. shaved or crushed ice will blend much more easily than cubed ice. you could also try a milk shake version that'd include roughly equal proportions of:

milk or chocolate milk
bailey's
kahlua
amaretto
*many others, such as creme de menthe or creme de cocao
ice cream or frozen yogurt

have fun, just be careful drinking sugary drinks - the sugar crash is worse than the hangover!

I'm not much of a drinker, but occasionally like to take a nip or two.

(Scotch) Glenfiddich single malt

(Beer) Rickards's Red

(Wine) Shiraz

(Liquer) Peppermint Schnapps (kept in the fridge)

(Being older now, a couple of beers on a hot day just makes me just want to lie down and take a snooze)

Thanks for the info guys, especially about the sugar. I'll start experimenting next week when I get a paycheck (and it's forcasted to be in the mid 90's, YaY!).

Since my personal religion doesn't allow use of drugs or alcohol

That is a little arbitrary is it not? Surly alchohol is not a source of temptation for every person in the religion, so why apply a rule like that to every person in the religion?

Personally, i have never realy liked the taste of any alchoholic drink? Alot of drinks taste nice with the first sip or two but then there is always that 'chemical' aftertaste which always puts me off.

The question as to how myself, a 35 year old Australian male can not like beer, well all i can say is that i have never been one to follow the crowd, i dunno, but doing things to try to fit in has never been my style. Usually the drawcard of beer and cigarettes is to try to fit in,,,, needles to say, i have never even tried a cigarette even once in my life, infact the offer of a cigarrette in my youth with the expectation of the power of peer pressure on the faces of the offerers would inspire a laugh from me,, the thought that i could be influenced by such primative forces was infact amusing to me!

Of all the many stupid things I have done in my life smoking cigarettes is at the top of the list. It is harder to kick than masturbation and not nearly as much fun. I personally don't drink very often anymore myself either. Once every few months I feel like getting hammered and end up drinking till I feel like superman and having fun with the lady till we pass out

With only one person "in the religion" it's very difficult not to appear arbitrary, even though I do my best to be democratic about things. ( Isn't that right, Precious? - Yes, yes, you're always right, Precious! )

Maybe I drank too much alcohol earlier in life, and I have only a few brain-cells left to work with ( 2 at least, it appears - though there may be more cringing in the corners ) ... I still have some fond memories in spite of all that, just thought I'd share them.

I don't drink Scotch for this reason. I like Jack Daniel's in a shot, but not over the rocks to sip on. Beer, now....beer is proof that God loves us!

does that make smirnoff ice and tequiza forms of heresey? if so, then here we have original sin:

Smirnoff ice is proof that the Russian Ortodox God loves us. Tequiza is proof that the lesser Mayan gods have no real power. And Zima is proof that Satan walks among us!

I drink old school. All these teeny-bopper training wheel drinks (Mikes Hard, Puckers, all the wacky flavors of schnapps) seem silly to me. If you want to drink Kool-Aid, drink Kool-Aid. The trick is to find a drink you like. There is an admirable quest!

A-F'ING-MEN! i can't stand the new malt beverage "craze." guh. tastes like battery acid sweetened with aspertame. i mean, sure, there's always been some kind of teeny bopper booze around: traditional schnapps, boone's farm, etc. i remember hearing that it became illegal to advertise hard liquor in the U.S. on TV, which is why so many of these companies developed these crappy "malt beverages" -- just to have something to advertise!

i agree as well that it's about finding your drink, and i think it starts with finding a beer. i've heard more people say they simply don't like the taste of beer than i can count. yet every one of them that i've known for long enough has eventually come over to the age-old tradition of drinking beer (or ale, meade, whatever). egyptian heiroglyphs indicate that the seasonal workers who helped build the pyrimids were paid at least partly in beer. the probably pilgrims landed on plymoth rock, rather than warmer climes to the south, because they ran out of beer. i think the most important thing a budding young drinker can do is figure out his/her beer of choice.

the same thing is happening with cocktails. my dive bar has a "martini" happy hour, except their all these sweetened recipie type martinis, like sour apple-tinis and rocket pop -tinis and oatmeal cookie -tinis. they taste good as deserts, but they're aren't for a real drinker.

my view on alcohol and sugar is that they don't mix very well. too much sugar in your alcohol leads you to have a sugar high and be drunk, except that you crash from the sugar high long before you're sober, drink more sugarey drinks, and end up getting utterly wasted just because you don't want to sugar crash. fruit sugars seem to be a little less severe in this. well, that's my point of view anyway. when i do make sugarey drinks, i make them strong and use hard liquor exclusively - to maximize the buzz in relation to the sugar high.

this is a general question to anyone reading: what is your opinion of jager?

We have jager bombs here. Basically you drop a shot of jager in cheap beer and drink it, totally disgusting. IMO jager is best drank outdoors when it is extremely cold (both the jager and the weather). In the summer it is basically cough syrup but for some reason I think the cold air in your throat and on you makes it tastes great. I like to sit on the porch when it snows and guzzle it from the bottle.

I like lots of diffrent drinks from the really hard stuff to what some call koolaid drinks. I drink for the taste more than the buzz. If it tastes like crap its no good.

Not a big fan of Jager. I don t hate it but I avoid it.

you know, i never thought that jager might be more tolerable in colder weather. the lowest it ever gets in SD is like low 50s. personally i hate anise, so i can't stand jager. but the same company makes a strong honey liquor that's pretty tasty.

i guess that makes my drinking multitasking - taste and buzz! i don't presume i need to say this, but when you drink a lot, the taste of alcohol starts to go away. then all those strange drinks that used to taste horrible suddenly have all this nuanced flavors you couldn't detect before. at least, that's why they tell me is supposed to happen with brandy.

Ah ic, your religion is 'personal' as in being of one person! lol

I'm pretty similar to chad in terms of taste. Not a fan of jager. Tried jager bombs and well, not trying it again ever would be a nice thing.

I personally think taste is more important than the buzz. I mean, it is alcohol, you'll get something off of it, so why not drink something that you like (so you keeping drinking more and more, lol )?

Dystopic, I think I can kinda explain the "people who don't like beer....but come around to it eventually" thing a little bit for you, being that I would be one of those people. As someone mentioned earlier about peer pressure, its sortta a peer pressure/ social occasion thing. I have an extreme tollerance and affinity for sugar, so beer isn't and never was my favorite drink. However, that doesn't mean I'll never drink beer, I just have a preference for other sweeter drinks.

I'll go out with the guys after work and have a beer. Is beer my first choice? No, but it is what is socially acceptable (when in Rome!). I have no problem with it, Beer tastes ok; I even have prefered beers that I order (hey if I'm gonna drink it, might as well get one that I like) If I'm going out with some friends or the significant other, will I have a beer? No. Different social situation.

I hope that explains it a bit. I got no problem drinking beer, its just not my first choice.

ps - brandy and coke, mmmmm yummmy

Dunno why, but sneaking off behind the woodshed with Sally to dig the Applejack bottle out of a snowdrift ... warm breath frosty in the winter night's air, cuddling her up under my coat while we watched the moonlight sparkle on the icy trees and the snow ...

... so much better than a smoky neanderthal bar packed full of stinky sluts, con artists, and sex addicts. You should try it at least once b4 you die.
