#3 on Game Rankings today

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/925349.asp

I visited Game Rankings today to see what was new and to my shock, Galactic Civilizations was #3 in the most popular games.

But..But..PC games are supposed to be dying right? Isn't that why it's hard to get shelf space? People don't play PC games? Certain promises were made.

And turn based strategy? Nobody plays turn based strategy. What's up with that? What are you people doing? Didn't you get the memo? Quit playing the game and get back to whatever it is you're supposed to be doing.

With the success of Civ IV and other games coming out this year, maybe publishers will really start to notice that A) The PC game market isn't so dead after all and B) There's a pretty good market for turn based strategy.

Incidentally, the other PC game on the list is also a strategy game.

On the issue of PC games dying, it's a shame many don't point out the fact that the PC has genres of games that console never will. Strategy titles most of all. Or that the PC decline has mirrored the drawback of shelf space for titles (and doesn't show a lack of consumers).

It is very frustrating buying a lot of games for the PC because of high end hardware requirements, and even then the games sometimes don't work. Consoles are pretty cheap--for the price of just buying a high end video card for your PC you can buy a PS2--and you are guaranteed that the developers and testers had the exact same system as you have.

The PC does offer the advantage of a mouse, which is ideal for controlling turn based games, not that many turn based games exist any more. It's also easy to play on the internet becuase your computer is already hooked up. In fact, when people say that PC games are dying, they are ignoring the trend of big online multpiplayer games like Final Fantasy XI, World of Warcraft, etc, these games rake in big money because of the monthly fee, and people often spend a lot of time playing them.

I'd like to point out the voter average is climbing as well! From around 8.4 to 8.8 now. If we didn't have those 4 troll votes, it would be at 9.5

Glad to see a great game is getting the recognition it deserves. The only problem now is managing time between GC2, Civ4, family, food and work (sleep went long ago).

I don't counts those who vote 1. Even if they didn't like it, it's far from being a 1.

I created a profile (It's very easy, no conformation mail and nothing...) and voted 10!

I believe the market for good PC games has always been there, but there was/is a lull (with exceptions) in the games being made. I was at at Best Buy this week end and they have one row of PC games and most of them are graphics driven crap that is a pc version of or should be a console game. Then they wonder why sales stink. If I didn't already have it GalCiv 2 was one of the only games I would have considered buying.

too true,
I thought about getting Empire Earth 2 when it came out then looked at the specs and said "OMG!!! It's just a stratedgy game, why in the blue holy hell does it need a top of the line wallet crushing machine to play?"

That score is nice, but i think being top on that list 3 days in a row takes more then a semi-indy developer and their strategy game. In my opinion, something is sketchy with their way of collecting their data.. most probably they value visits coming from a game related site (aka this site) too high, as a comparision:
www.gamestats.com : current place is 375

Congratulations! I would just like to add that I (and obviously many other people) think this game is just wonderful. Really great stuff.

I think this will go a long way to further the interest in "Indie" game companies and maybe even make a statement to "mainstream" companies that putting out an average game that relies on a franchise (cough - Lucas Arts) is not acceptable to gamers.

If more companys were like stardock PC gaming would pound consoles... The only thing holding PC gaming back are the hoops other companys make us jump through to play their games... 3 GB installations along with a dozen key codes and 4 discs that we have to continually switch even though the game is installed on our hard drive! Then companys like Sony and Star force with their draconian copyright protections...
