#3 on Game Rankings today

I visited Game Rankings today to see what was new and to my shock, Galactic Civilizations was #3 in the most popular games.

But..But..PC games are supposed to be dying right? Isn't that why it's hard to get shelf space? People don't play PC games? Certain promises were made.

And turn based strategy? Nobody plays turn based strategy. What's up with that? What are you people doing? Didn't you get the memo? Quit playing the game and get back to whatever it is you're supposed to be doing.

With the success of Civ IV and other games coming out this year, maybe publishers will really start to notice that A) The PC game market isn't so dead after all and There's a pretty good market for turn based strategy. 

Incidentally, the other PC game on the list is also a strategy game.

That totally rocks. The game is outstanding. It's been a great few months for strategy gamers. Civ 4 is really fun and GalCiv 2 is incredible.

Pity a couple of griefers on the URL you posted gave the game a rating of 1 to knock its overall rating down to less than 9. What's wrong with people like that?

Congratulations to you guys. It's not just a good day for Stardock, it's a good day for PC strategy gamers IMHO.

Congrats! I've already purchased my copy, and I have convinced my friend to buy a copy direct download for himself.

I would love to know what the sales figures look like for this game so far, since we all feel so close to the development team, and we all want this game to make you lots and lots of money. : )

Kudos on the lack of copy protection by the way. Funny how I’ve felt more motivated to actually buy this game since there is no copy protection in place.

you could make an argument that it is second. The first two are the same game just different platforms.

PC Game World gave it a 90/100 and Gamerankings gave it a 95/100.
And on the gamerankings one the reviewer said it is the highest rating he has ever given a game.

The reason why I believed PC games were dying was because it seemed that no matter what game i bought it had some problem with my computer i would then have to go online and download some update and then it may or may not work properly. I stopped buying PC games for a while, i didnt want to deal with compatibility issues or half@$$ed made games that would be finished by 20 different patches. This will be the first game I will have bought for PC since Rise of Nations. The only guarentee I have that it will work is the low minimum requirements which mine exceeds in some parts.

Congratulations Stardock!

I know everyone is anxiously awaiting more reviews of GC2 esp from Gamespot and IGN. Hopefuly, the rating will be even higher....not that 92.5% isn't already extremely good.

I know everyone is anxiously awaiting more reviews of GC2 esp from Gamespot and IGN.

You know, except for people who are annoyed by the fanboyish ads that most review sites shovel out, and the crappy rating system they use (70% is a mediocre game?)

Still, good job on the ranking on gamerankings.

dont surprise me at all this game is too good to not be in the top ten! and it thought that i was addicted to Civ 4 boy did i not know what a real addiction is

One of the major reasons I'm so happy to see GalCiv 2 sell so well is that it will open the doors for other new turn based games. Civilization is all well and good but it would be nice to see something else in

QUIET !!! You fool ! Now we are gonna have 20 complete garbage turn based strategy games come out and fail so the lowest common denominator publishers can prove yet again they can screw up any genre.

PC owns strategy games hands down, the only compeition I can think of is PSII esque rqg strat games ie: Final fantasy tactics. Combine that with a great AI and you got your self a winner. One of the main reasons I get bored with strat games is that the AI don't really put up a challenge unless you give them some kind of external benefit. And honestly, games of this style is alot likely to appeal to mature customers who have disposable income to spend as opposed to broke teenagers who might go to emule to get their fix on dungeon siege 5 or something.

PC > *. man, everytime a new console comes out people forecast the end of the PC as gaming platform. console sucks and so do most console games anyway. as strategy/roleplayer and MMOGamer consoles dont offer anything for me. My last console was the Super Nintendo many years ago. it will remain that way.

For strategy games, and turnbased strat games my favourite gaming style, PC owns all comers... Strategy/turnbased gaming is dead my a$$ long live the PC and Long live Stardock, all hail the new king Galatic Civ 2. P.S. This game rocks...if you don't know you should...and Civ 4 aint got nothing on this nore does Empire Earth 2.

As you see, there is a market for TBS games. For good TBS games. That's was most developers don't get. But GalCiv II is good!

I loved MOO2, and was originally a skeptic of GalCiv 2. I never played GalCiv 1 because of the lack of ship design. As I read these boards over the past month, I gradually became convinced. Now I have won my first real game in GalCiv 2, and I believe it is time to declare this game: "STATE OF THE BADASS ART." (Apologies to _Aliens_, Director's Cut.)

ACCOLADES TO STARDOCK ! I just happen to "bump into GC2" when I purposely visited Stardock's website to see what's new cooking in the Stardock kitchen when low and behold I see the Galactic Civilization II advertisement. I then came to this site. I was impressed with what I saw and heard about the game. And the forums here are outstanding and Stardock has one great wonderful forum community. I also see that the developers are active and participate here. I was one of those gamers who didn't take to Galactic Civilations and kept playing Alpha Centauri and eventually bought Civilization IV (hisssss) which to this day, I just haven't truly taken to the game. Within an hour of visiting Stardock's site and checking out Object Dock and other things (which I plan to purchase as well) I immediately ordered my CD boxed copy of GC2. I also emailed the sales office asking them about the "fat looking game box" and was that an indication of a nice juicy 200+ page spiral bound game manual? They responded the next day telling me yes the boxed version comes with a game manual but it is not spiral bound. They did not tell me how many pages the game manual has but I AM hoping it has more pages than the PDF manual that came with the digital download.

Gameplay. I have only played GC2 "every day" since I bought it online. My first game was a solid 7 hour game. Wow this is FUN. Mind you, I will NEVER stop liking Alpha Centauri nor will I stop playing it. Errr... well I guess I lied, because right now the only game I AM playing is Galactic Civilizations II. But I've also been playing S.W.A.T.4 to recooperate from buying and playing Rainbox Six: Lockdown, which by the way, my refund from Ubisoft is in progress as we speak.

By the way, I too have purchased and WAS playing Star Wars: Empire At War (SWEAR) "before" I bought GC2. And, SWEAR is a good game and it is fun. It's just not as good and not as fun as GC2. So I was very glad to see GC2 on the leaderboard where it belongs.

I think you are jumping to conclusions. If you go to the main chart, Gal Civ 2 isn't even listed, I would suspect the recent spike in popularity is because someone from this forum posted a link to gamerankings with the claim that an 8.4 was too low and that people here should vote there to bring it higher.

otoh, there was only 1 left at Walmart.

It's not like every TBS game could have done this - it had to be a really good one!

I don't agree on one thing though:
Incidentally, the other PC game on the list is also a strategy game.

It was put quite well on a German forum: "The main difference between GalCiv 2 and Empire at War is, that GalCiv is a strategy game while EaW isn't."
