DOWNLOAD WOES!

DOWNLOAD WOES!

Downloading problems here.

On Tuesday, February 14th users who were in the BETA program will be able to PRE-LOAD the game via Stardock Central.

On Wednesday, February 15th, all users who pre-ordered directly will be able to PRE-LOAD the game as well.

It requires an updated version of Stardock Central that has been designed to make use of our updated server farm infrastructure. So in theory, your download speeds should be very fast.

Stardock Central 2.29a or later is needed. Go HERE to get it.

However, some % of people are going to have problems.  This thread is to make it easier for them (and us) to figure out what went wrong.

Important points:

1) Don't assume the problem you run into is universal.  So if you run into a problem, please report it.

2) Give as much information as you can.   The log info will be important.

3) There are 3 types of failure:

a) Server Time-Out -- this is where you lost connection to the server. We want to know about this as the new server farm should be able to handle 10X what we are expecting. Don't worry though, Stardock Central supports download resume.

b) User-Validation failure.  This is where the system can't find your information in the database. Is the email address you used to order the same as the email address you used here?   Once your order has been processed (i.e. beta users have already been processed, pre-orders will be processed the end of the day tomorrow) you will receive an email with info.  If you lose this info, go here and put in the email address you think you used to buy the game.

c) Extraction error.  This is where it has downloaded but it fails to properly extract. This should be pretty rare.

We are anticipating a 2% problem level. That is, 2% of users will run into some problem.  That's approximately 100 people from the beta and initial direct pre-order group (we aren't assuming all users will try this out).

So this thread could get pretty busy.  Stay tuned.

We will begin at around 2:30pm EST.

I got this error message after the first part of the download finished and was installing. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong though; is this just a message that one's supposed to get because it's only a preload, or because I bought the boxed version and am using the temporary serial number? The preload menu runs (very nice looking with the transparency and whatnot, by the way).

G'kar (And others).  The orders were processed sequentually so there's a LOT of them.

If you don't have it by tomorrow, email [email protected] and they can look into your order (all the more reason glad we're doing this NOW and not next week).

The #4 server is the slowest, at about 85KB/sec average . california is the next slowest at 100 KB/sec averahge. Chicago is running at 125 KB/sec . These are pathetically slow. I have an 8Mb/sec cable connection. When the server s are optimal from Stardock, I have averaged from 600KB/sec to 900KB/sec. The server farm has not proved nearly as effective as Brad had predicted.

Thanks Avatar T-Man
After removing my serial # then reloading stardock it automaticaly put in my serial # and no more errors.
Nice work.

PS download rates are great.
I'm averaging around 300 KB/sec

The pre-orders were processed sequentially in batches today. As of about 7pm EST, they should all be processed and you should have emails.

If you do not, please visit stardock.com/support and enter your email address there, see if appears. Check that it was the email address you ordered under.

And then email [email protected] so we can look into it.

I know there were some failures for various reasons (invalid info, cc bits, whatever), but everything should be processed.

We have made some changes to the -4 and California server to try and optimize validation (the timeout errors). The same changes were not applied to the Chicago server to be able to have something to compare against. Also additional tweaks to sort what -18 html detected in download bits we've been able to reproduce.

Resume functionality will be looked at again on Thursday. We've had it resuming right in testing, but with the traffic now, it's been more difficult to test against when some people were reporting difficulties earlier in the download process. So we've tried to adjust for those first.

Nothing more is going to be fiddled with for the next 12 hours (until after 8am EST on Thursday).

Kris

Great work on the pre-downloading. I had installed Stardock Central last week. As soon as I got the email, I launched it, and was prompted to update. After the update, GalCiv2 showed up without any need to enter the temporary serial sent in the email. Download speeds were around 200-400k.

Got it all down in about 15 min. Ave speeds between 500 and 600 Kbps. Good work folks. I did get some message about about my email accounts needing to merged which I thought was odd because I spoke with someone at Stardock about this previously and I thought they did so at that time.

Worked great once I saw that I had two nearly identical e-mails...second one had a working serial.

Did I missed something or is it the same functionnality that the Lookup Serial Number function in SDC under tools?

Got it now! Can't wait to start playing...
Starts singing along with Johnny, Willie, Kris & Waylon:

I fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again...

My email apparently was sent right after I hit the 'send' button to my earlier post

So as a followup, I managed to download everything smoothly from SD's servers. I was hitting about ~50KB/sec, but thats because I am overseas. Still managed to get all the pre-downloads archived, bundled it to a disk and installed it on my gaming rig.

2xThumbsUp to the SD crew!

Like many others, I updated SDC but was only able to download two of the four modules.

After reinstalling GDC, everything worked fine.

Downloaded and installed the program this midday.

Living in Europe (Netherlands) Gal Civ II come through at approx. 40-50KB/s. The tutorials, movies and multimedia at speeds of 2000KB/s. Big difference in speed imo.
Another one from the EU here. I got excellent download rates; 120-150 kb/s for the game itself and about 600 kb/s for the files.

Downloaded about half of the game now (from Germany).

Had to restart Movies, though - got an error during download/installation (-19 connection closed by the server, followed by -18 HTML code detected and then a couple of more -19 errors).

I'll try again and see if the error hits me again...

I didn't get any mail at all. After check out I was forwarded to the search page of the shop. I don't really have the courage to try again untill I know for certain that I haven't ordered yet.

All worked the second time - I'm off watching the tutorials now!

FYI, as of 4:30 pm EST Feb 16, I'm still not able to get downloads to resume (i.e., if the connection is interrupted, the download starts over). Using SDC version 2.29a.374, build 117.

We think we've got the resume stuff happier now. Change made to the servers.

If that is not the case for you after 6pm EST Thursday, please email [email protected] and I'll give you a debug build so we can try and narrow things down.

An alternative is to use the US - 4 server in the SDC listing, which has been modified for resuming in another fashion as well.

Trying to figure out your issue, Drew3077. Please email [email protected] your log file from .\sdcentral\installed.

I would like to make a slight comment about the 'restore archive' feature. Make sure you have sufficient free space (on C: drive) to execute the 'restore archive' function... a good estimate would be the actual size of the archive files themselves.

Situation:
1. C: drive had about 500MB free space left.
2. D: drive had > 5GB free space left. It is also where SDC and GalCiv 2 are installed.
3. I copied all the pre-load archived files and started the restore archive function.

I was able to restore the 'Game Install', but the moment I hit the multimedia archive I hit an error. Admit I didn't record error msg, but noticed my C: drive's free space dropping to > 100MB!

I assumed that SDC used C: drive as a temporary file to decompress the archives. But for some reason I couldn't find where the temporary files were. (I just realise I didn't check C:\Windows\temp, it could have gone there).

Anyway I removed some trash from C: drive till it had about 1GB free space, then restarted the restore archive function and bing! it worked smoothly.

Well that was what I observed so if my above statement could be incorrect, I welcome comments from the SD staff.

Please, could someone tell me whether or not I ordered the game? I didn't get any confirmation mail and want to know for sure I didn't order before trying again.

@Mountainforest:

go to

Link

and put your Email in there. When your order was successful then you should get an email with your serial number after a very short time.
And if that doesn't help write directly to stardock.

hope that helped.
