DOWNLOAD WOES!

DOWNLOAD WOES!

Downloading problems here.

On Tuesday, February 14th users who were in the BETA program will be able to PRE-LOAD the game via Stardock Central.

On Wednesday, February 15th, all users who pre-ordered directly will be able to PRE-LOAD the game as well.

It requires an updated version of Stardock Central that has been designed to make use of our updated server farm infrastructure. So in theory, your download speeds should be very fast.

Stardock Central 2.29a or later is needed. Go HERE to get it.

However, some % of people are going to have problems.  This thread is to make it easier for them (and us) to figure out what went wrong.

Important points:

1) Don't assume the problem you run into is universal.  So if you run into a problem, please report it.

2) Give as much information as you can.   The log info will be important.

3) There are 3 types of failure:

a) Server Time-Out -- this is where you lost connection to the server. We want to know about this as the new server farm should be able to handle 10X what we are expecting. Don't worry though, Stardock Central supports download resume.

b) User-Validation failure.  This is where the system can't find your information in the database. Is the email address you used to order the same as the email address you used here?   Once your order has been processed (i.e. beta users have already been processed, pre-orders will be processed the end of the day tomorrow) you will receive an email with info.  If you lose this info, go here and put in the email address you think you used to buy the game.

c) Extraction error.  This is where it has downloaded but it fails to properly extract. This should be pretty rare.

We are anticipating a 2% problem level. That is, 2% of users will run into some problem.  That's approximately 100 people from the beta and initial direct pre-order group (we aren't assuming all users will try this out).

So this thread could get pretty busy.  Stay tuned.

We will begin at around 2:30pm EST.

All you need to do is install SDC on your work computer, download+install the game, then use SDC's archive option. This will create a few zip files in Program Files/Stardock/Sdcentra/backup, just copy then onto one or two CDs along with the installation file for SDC. You should then be able to install SDC at home, copy the zips to the backup folder there, then use the restore from archive option to install GC2.

Keep in mind it'll most likely take you another trip to and from work to get it working. Once you have it installed, go to Program Files/Stardock/Totalgaming/GalCiv2 and delete the sig.bin file found there. Run the game, and you'll get a prompt to activate. Give it your email address and serial key, continue, tell it you want to activate via email. Then copy/paste the big long code, email subject, and email address it gives you into a file you can take back to work, and email it off from there. You should get a sig.bin that works for your home computer in your email within one US business day; take it back home, put it in the GalCiv2 folder, and play!

It does require a bit of footwork, but it is possible. The main difficulty is that while the patches add lots of new fixes and features, they also require online activation (and there is no telephone activation).

If you want a retail disc+box (which will allow you to install directly anytime with no cd-check or serial key) and have already bought the download only version, I believe you can simply contact [email protected] from the email address you used on your order, and ask them about getting a CD after-the-fact. It should cost only USD$10 for shipping but otherwise it does not cost you any more.

Hello to al,
I'm newbie here.
with the last 'stardock central' I've downloaded/installed the file installation.
Now it's downloading the movies-files, tutorials and multimedia.
I've tried to launch the game, but all the buttons haven't the labels.
I suppose that I must wait for all pachages to be downloaded or there're problems?
thanks to all.

Please start a new thread and post the contents of the file debug.err, which can be found in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2 (or your language's equivalent).
