It's not as restrictive as it seems. You can do like me: 1. Instal Impulse 2. Update your game 3. use impulse to create an archive of your installed and patched game 4. use your cd burner to burn impulse and the archive 5. remove impulse now you just need to reinstall impulse next time you need to reinstall the game. you don't need to be online to use impulse. think of it as win-zip / win-rar or any other archiving software you d

in the mid/end game starships dominate far more than starbases. but yes, starbases can balance things when facing a stronger oponent. building them for invading planets is a bit a wate of time IMO unless it's a planet with fleet orbital manager or stuff like that. the main purpose of military starbases is to help take down strong enemy starbase. but unfortunately the AI don't do a terrific job there in building their starbase defense.... also the biggest problem is the AI not realizing you're lu

yep, I use my vultures for the luring too. the scan ships are really for the borders, or when keeping tabs on a stronger oponent (it does happen at the hardest difficulty !) It's also great to survey the perimeter of a far away resource base. less expensive than leaving a fleet there. One thing to understand: the scanning is a radius. so lots of scanners + eyes of the universe = HUGUE view. you hardly need to move to see things. basically the scan ship see e

cyberj914, what difficulty are you playing at ? Are you sure this work at all ? high taxes: low population growth buy ships: expensive for nothing you can crank up 1 ship / turn at 33% military very early if you buy factories another reason it's a bad idea, early on, even if you take the speed racial hability, and the yor miniaturize + Ion drive.... those ship are still patheticaly slow compared to what you can crank up latter. Also, the colony

you CANT go broke on small map. he's obviously speaking of large maps (well, in thery you could go broke on small maps if you play really insanly badly... that would deserve its own medal) all that talk about economic research is a bit pointless too. if you're at that point, you obviously didn't get broke, did you ? the usual problem is starting up... it's easy to get broke... just colonize every planet on sight and build factories and research centers like a maniac... you WILL

The starbases have some really interesting features, but some get obsolete too fast. the speed increase/speed decrease become totally uselless once the fast drives are researched because the radius of impact of the starbase is smaller than what enemy ships can cover ! could there be more modules with those effects to reduce enemy speed further or increase or speed ? another possibility is to increase starbase radius to match the scan range ? or have separate technology

Here is some advanced advice The prime thing to understand in GC2 is that while there are many ways to win, you have to be coherent in your strategy. you can't be good at everything early on. you have to choose a strategy that fit your play style for me, it all start with custom ships. understanding how you can specialize ships. some of my favorites: vulture: cargo hul

custom race PQ +20% Morale +15 Neutral (as soon as you can, hugue morale bonus, all tiles availlable) custom tech: remove hyperdrive (takes 2 turn to research at research 100%, no lab) add sensors (allow you to quickly build 4+ very fast survey vessels/scouts) BUY factories, focus on military/research as soon as you reach 1 ship/turn... you can move to the standard 33% unfocused focus research on fast drive technology and range (as long as it's re

It boost your population growth insanely. If you got the neutral boost + all the achievement boost + some resource boost... you can have both morale at 100% AND insanely high taxe rate the AI is very slow at targeting morale achievements (hint hint) Also Planet Quality impact morale, so it's much easier than it seem PQ Boost (hability) + colonizing only large (15+) planet initially + neutral automatic availlability of planet tiles => gigantic pla

you could already do it by designing your own ship from scratch. I always build ultra fast scouts using cargo hulls early on (upgrade to survey after sensors is discovered) and relatively fast colony ships (the colony module eat up a lot of space, make them much slower than scout)
