Apologies if some of these have been mentioned before, but here are my suggestions: 1. Manage starbases similarly to colonies, with an improvement queue. Each constructor arriving in the starbase can then be used to automatically upgrade it 2. Events that can turn some AI players really strong (precursor device?) should optionally be triggered for the player's civ as well

It would be really nice if the "discovering Precursor artifact" event could happen to the player's civilization as well?
Doesn't always work; playing it right now and there's a Dread Lord Observer guarding the planet. Argh. Back to ship-building..
I normally put a fleet on a starbase on guard; that way, when a non-allied ship/fleet approach within sensor range they get awakened. Really useful if the starbase has wake interdiction for slowing down the enemy fleet too.
Won't morale be really really poor on such planets? I'd imagine a Dread Lord-type situation where only 20m is supported.
And on the earlier mission, when I was supposed to be given instructions on how to place the spies on dirith I didn't get a single thing! Where am I supposed to find all this useful information? Does it even exist!? You're not meant to get additional information. The spymaster's job is to make sure that once you place the four spies on the planet, they will manage to find the necessary information. I was wondering why we're given such a
