I'm no fan of fame, but I like Takei for a few reasons and there's no doubt that more folks in the U.S. need to know our own history when it comes to 'making the world safe for democracy.'

For those of you interested in SF pre-capitulating real engineering, I recommend Vernor Vinge's Rainbow's End . The novel's setting features exactly the sort of novo-nano-thinking that Doc praises in this thread--it's a world where personal computing tech is wearable.

Everyone would be better off shunning all the cable news channels in favor of good old-fashioned reading. Important things deserve thoughtful engagement, which is impossible in a high-tech non-stop circus.
