I think you like Microsoft far too much. a game works, that means Vista is implacable Actually I was simply pointing out obvious factual errors in the previous poster's assertion. I was never saying Vista was perfect. I say frequently, however, that there are MANY reasons why some users should not yet upgrade to Vista. However, most of the reasons I hear people give me are not those reasons. I don't need it - Valid reason

NONE of your games worked? Seriously? Odd, the rest of the world that actually TRIED Vista hasn't run into that, unless by "None" you mean you only tested ONE game off a list of very old games. While some folks have problems with Vista, I actually found this interesting: WWW Link The game in question - Supreme Commander - actually comes out FASTER in Vista on their tests than XP... To
That article has been debunked. The guy who wrote it has never even installed Vista, nor does he have any authoritative sources. Much of what he wrote has been shown to be mere guesswork and conjecture, and in many cases are completely incorrect. Yet, it gets passed off as fact because he made it look official.
Or at least an official 1.5X bugs thread
Actually, there's a pretty big metaverse bug wherein any games reported to the Metaverse get flagged as Cheated.
Ahh, good to see this confirmed. I did manage to get a debug.err in the other thread - had to launch DA as administrator (since this is Vista, that's not the default) to get the debug.err.
Aha, run as administrator, here is the debug.err (and it does flag cheat in here inexplicably): Debug Message: Version v1.50X Dark Avatar last updated on: Wed Feb 28 10:01:41 2007 Debug Message: Checking DX Version. Debug Message: *********DXDiag info follows.********* System Info Time: 3/5/2007, 08:13:47 DirectX Version: DirectX 10 Machine Name: BARD Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6000) (6000
I'm playing under Windows Vista - that probably counts as a limited account. Come to think of it, the earlier time that it did write one I tried running as administrator due to another (now resolved) problem... so I'll try running it as administrator.
I acutally uninstalled and reinstalled COMPLETELY clean, and even used a new profile here on the metaverse, played a game without modifying anything - and STILL got cheat flagged. I'm 100% certain it's a bug.
If you played the entire game in one session, and haven't started the game again since you finished, check your debug.err for a line indicating that the game was cheat flagged at a certain point. I played again and got cheatflagged. However, this time, I first UNINSTALLED both the original GC2 and Dark Avatar expansion pack. I made sure all files were deleted both in the Docs & Settings folder as well as the
It appears my game did not create a debug.err - the debug.err file I have is from right *before* I started the game, when it was having difficulties launching (due to a Vista error)...
Hmm, my debug.err doesn't seem to contain that info, it instead contains info from *before* I played the game, when galciv was refusing to launch (a different problem wherein certain programs on the Vista desktop will block anything from going fullscreen).
I have noticed that the Minor races really are... minor in this game. Basically when one of them shows up later in the game, the whole point seems to be merely as fodder for the nearest troppship. They don't even start with a single defender anymore - not like the old games where they could be quite tough.
Some races in that game had been set up in 1.5, but the game was started in 1.5X. Worse, I just played another game that is my highest score yet after 8 very grueling hours - AND IT SAYS I CHEATED... In this game, I was playing the Thelan empire, and the computer picked only one custom race for the AI - that I created under 1.5X - all the rest were standard. No mods loaded. And it says I cheated.
My latest game posted to the Metaverse shows "Detected Cheat Codes"... All I did was to use custom AI races. I thought we could do that? Also, it *never* warned me before submitting the score, and now my Metaverse score is marred with a cheat code icon as if I was some lowly cheat! I'd rather simply not have that score on there, but I was never warned it would show up as a cheat code. So ... are we not able to customise AI races without setting the cheat flag? I'm kindaannoyed at this.
While I'd love to see this come out, Stardock is a small company. They've got a good series going with GalCiv2 and potentially Sins of a Solar Empire. Going into a new field is difficult for a company the size of Stardock, who are pretty diversified as it is for their size. That said - I'd love to see more emphasis put on Society than has been...However I have preordered Sins of a Solar Empire and would like to see it come out on time also <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/
Well obviously you're on the GalCiv2 forums so we're all biased... However - GalCiv2 got some very good awards when it was released, and is generally recognized as a VERY fine game. From what I've read about SE5 - it appears that has a poor AI - which is one of the strengths of the GalCiv series. Also, I must say the graphics in GalCiv are much better and have a much more modern feel to them. SE5 looks like something out of the 1990s to me.
I guess the biggest thing I've got from this thread - let me make sure I've got it correct. A planet producing nothing at the shipyard is producing extra income then, and may be able to pay for itself whereas one producing, say, capital ships that will take 120 turns, may not? So basically I shouldn't be building ships at ALL on the planets that are not production worlds? This is vastly different than the way I've been playing, which was to make use of every available shipyard even duri
Well, that whole not-full-screen bit wasn't such a good idea (especially with the same resolution as my desktop)... However, just setting the Weidth & Height by itself seems to have kicked it in the keister, and I'm not getting the glitch now, even in fullscreen mode (which is how games are meant to be played). Thanks!
I hadn't tried DA since one of the first betas, and certainly not since I installed Vista. Today I decided that now that it is finished, I'd give it a shot. First thing right out of the box, during the splash screen, I notice the mouse "sticks" to the top of the screen. It continued to do this at the main menu, and I had to use Alt-F4 to exit the game since I couldn't even mouse down to "quit"... When it does this, the mouse will move a little bit, then snap back to the top. Th
I haven't tried a beta of GalCiv in quite a while, and it worked before (beta 2 I believe). I just tried the latest beta, and it crashes on load every time. I am running an Athlon64 3500+ with 1GB Ram, XP service pack 2. ATI Radeon 9800 XT with latest drivers. Here is the exception report: Stardock SmartException Logging Information ------------------------------------------- OS Version : Windows XP
Heh... my luck was that my planets flipped to the opposing side by the third turn.
I've also noticed that sometimes a stray graphic gets introduced on the ship design screen... it just kinda sits there, not colored the same as the rest of the ship, nor does it rotate with the ship.
I'm wondering if running 64bit windows is giving me a huge advantage here. It may be, I got similar high figures. Are you running the socket 939 or socket 754 3400+? (most are 754, the 939 3400+ doesn't officially exist...)
