I want to chime in on the AI skipping techs. I have a saved game where all of the AIs have Warp Drive, but none of them have Antimatter (or else it isn't showing as available to trade). Some of them have 1D Phasing, but no one has Instant Communications. I hope this is addressed soon.

wonka, I agree with Gert. Social improvements that give bonuses to ships affect all ships constructed on that planet, even those built *before* the social improvement was completed. Totally counter-intuitive, I know, but true. I remember being totally surprised by this fact when I saw a post from Frogboy explaining it. As for the original question: I believe that the bonuses stack but it is difficult to confirm without getting one of your planets invaded. As many have said, the bonuses
Re-reading DMF's comments I can see how I misinterpreted them. Thanks Raleigh.
I don't have anything to add to people's comments on why your economy is tanking, Wes. I think they have pretty much covered it. Your taxes are too high for your government type, plus your research capacity is much higher than your social or military. I did want to respond to a couple of things other folks said (sorry if I'm hijacking your new thread Wes). In some thread awhile back Frogboy said that tweaking your taxes around too often will drag your morale down. This is supposed to pu
I've never tried the all Starfighter route but it does sound like it would be fairly effective, sad to say. I'm not as clever about avoiding wars as some folks are here. If I find myself at war or under threat of war and Battlehammers are available to me (or can be researched quickly) then I build them. They're still more powerful overall than anything that comes before them. If my opponent has Battleships I find that I can still hold them off with Battlehammers (so long as there aren't *too* ma
But... but I thought I was "scoring!"
The advice in the manual about rush buying colony ships seems to be, well, bad. The system that bonscott explained works much better. I like to throw some Constructors into the early mix as well, though, since the AI will snap up resources very quickly if you aren't careful.
I think it is easier to avoid war if you are good. The Altarians and Torians are less likely to come after you this way, seems like. Whereas the Drengin and the Yor are still liable to attack you if you're evil.
#4, that's an interesting idea but I think CariElf would have said something were that the case. It'd be a good idea for anyone else who has experienced this to send a saved game to the e-mail CariElf gave us, if you have one.
I've found this to be troublesome as well s w, and my initial reaction wasn't unlike yours. But I'm gradually learning how to cope. There actually seems to be a variety of ways to deal with this problem, witness the posts above. I suggest you try one of these strategies. Or you could do what I do, which is simply accept the fact that someone will declare war on me in the early to middle part of the game, and be prepared to ride it out.
While I like the Metaverse concept, I really don't think it has been implemented very well. :( No one seems to be able to understand why we get the scores that we do, what our overall score means vs. our individual game scores, etc. Having a high scores list doesn't count for much if we don't know what the scores represent. It'd really be great if Stardock could give us at least a moderately detailed explanation of the scoring system.
Alas, I had been playing for awhile without saving when I won, and foolishly didn't think to keep an autosave. I will keep an eye out in the future. As for affecting my score, well it doesn't seem to have registered in the Metaverse anyway. :(
I once received a huge stack of Pre-Cursor Corvettes. 100 of them. I didn't need them so I decided to see what they could do for me if I sent them on a rampage. The results were odd. They were mostly attacking Dreadnaughts, sometimes defending against them. I would have battles where 20 odd corvettes would die to kill a single dreadnaught. Then I'd have a battle where I'd kill the Dreadnaught and suffer maybe 3 losses. I was actually expecting them to just get slaughtered, since the dreadnaught
It seems to me that whenever I win the game, it says that my Most Influential Star is "N/A." In my most recent game, it not only said this, but the Torian Confederation's Most Influential Star was shown as being Sol, which of course I owned. What gives? Is this affecting my score?
I had a map with two high influence purple stars on it. Their planets were habitable but unexceptional. I was playing the high luck party (Universalists? I forget) at the time, but I've played plenty of games with them where I found no purple stars.
I am in total agreement with Ken on points 1, 2, and 4. Those are the source of no end of annoyance for me. I would love to see them improved. And I'm going to take this opportunity to lobby for a slider bar (and/or mousewheel support) for the list of researchable/researched technologies in the tech screen. Way too much clicking is required to scroll through that thing. Point 3 hasn't been a problem for me. So while an undo button would be nice, I don't put it on nearly the same priorit
I used to have the same trouble that you do Richard. I ended up hitting upon much the same sort of strategy that fsk+ suggests. If you put everything you have into military then Earth can generally build a colony ship every 2 turns. I use the first of those colonies to build a scout or three, and the rest to build constructors. They can usually turn one out in about 20 turns. So by, say, turn 40, you can easily have 4 or 5 Constructors, and you ought to be able to get at least 2 or 3 resources b
Many people seem to feel that cultural victories get the lowest scores, period. This would seem to be supported by Code Monkey's experiment with cultural vs. alliance victory. With that said, it seems kind of silly that an alliance victory would score *so* much higher than cultural. Alliance win must be the easiest method after cultural. Heck, if you judge by my performance, it is the easiest way to win.
LDiCesare is right. This is a problem not so much because it lets you turn OK planets into super planets (after hours of work) but because it lets the player turn the many crummy planets into OK planets.
I know that Frogboy has commented that the Arceans have a starbase focused AI.
This reminds me of the complaints that the bonuses to military and social prodcution do not do anything. Last I heard Stardock was insisting that they did work, but I never did hear an explanation of why they appeared to be doing nothing. If such an explanation exists then perhaps it applies here as well... Anyone know? :)
Paquma, I've read a few threads in which you have posted recently, and I have to say that your experiences don't mirror mine, or seemingly those of many other players. Even with significant amounts of trade and friendly relations with an AI empire, I have had it try to extort money from me if their military rating is more than mine. For that matter, I've had AI empires that were friendly with, shared alignment with, and was trading with, just declare war out of the blue if they (correctly, sad t
My games take much longer than yours, Paquma. I agree that avoiding wars is a good idea, but I haven't discovered the knack for that yet. If any AI ever gets even a modest military advantage over me it starts to demand so much tribute that I cannot possibly pay it (for example: key star systems, 1,200 treasury when I have 300). So I am baffled as to how you could keep the Arceans (and presumably other civs as well) with Overlords from attacking your BattleAxe based military until so late in the
It seems to me that what it comes down to is the whole tribute system is out of whack. The AI does not accurately assess the military strength of the various empires nor does it assess their bank accounts properly. As a result you have AI empires that think they are much more powerful than they actually are constantly demanding more money than you can possibly afford to pay. So of course you refuse, and before too long you are at war. The only way I've found to prevent this from happening every
Me too! Me too! It makes my floor shake fer cryin' out loud. The neighbors are gonna start complaining soon.
