Schizmatrix Plus by Bruce Sterling Dune. Use Of Weapons. Revelation Space. Fairyland (yes it's SF!) And of course: Shadow Of The Torturer.

"Quit whining" Irony levels increasing... I'd far rather see a fully 3D map than multiplyer.
So Brad... how's the apiary going?
Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space series are my current favourite.
The point is, anything done by yourself for fun is a waste. Uh, that's a huge and unsupported assumption. I like being on my own. In fact I need to spend a lot of time on my own. I get pretty stressed if I don't get at least 1 or 2 evenings a week to myself, and I prefer more. What would you have me do meanwhile, stare at the wall?
Mind you, I laughed like a hyena when I saw this http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/03/26
You're quite right; video games are violent and anti-social. That's what I like about them. Being able to interact with other people (imaginary or otherwise) largely on the basis that I have several horribly be-weaponed starships helps me control my urge to interact with the people I ACTUALLY work with using a powerful battery-powered circular saw.
D/L now. thx guys! I'm no beta-tester, but I pre-ordered to show my support for the GalCiv project and also a great company. Money well spent.
"I mean, when was the last time you saw the dark side of Frogboy or CariElf outside of a Metaverse-related rant thread?" In a multiplayer one...?
Frogboy didn't say that it was too much effort trying to kill them, but that his economy cant afford to sustain that level of security. Mild topical comment detected ) Seriously though, I appove of this approach; diminishing returns make for inte
Fuels - my comment is mainly directed at Metaverse players who, having figured out how to "beat" the AI by building ships with 50 moves per turn that strike every planet and conquer all in a single turn think that the AI is "poor" when in fact the problem is that there's no practical defense to such a strategy. Fair comment - I always wondered w
The argument that a transport of 85 moves to 3 is too harsh really tells me that I need to go back in and make engines cost a lot more space and money. Or that we want much bigger maps... *walks away, whistling*
You have no idea how badly I want to do this. Change gender?
AI uber alles!
For me personally I think DA has far exceeded my expectations for the expansion A vindication for those of us who voted "Wait longer for more"!
What's a bummer is that this is really a BIG feature for players but I'm not sure how many people other than the people who actually play the game ongoing will really see the benefit. This feature costs as much as say a full cut scene or two. I'd sacrifice every last cut-scene and a kitten too for the kind of AI improvement you're talking about
If you read any of Brad's journals just before the DA announcement, he seems to agree with some of your sentiment as well. I think that the galaxy needs I think it's time to start thinking about GC3...
Starforce actually came to my home and killed my wife and kids, kidnapped my dog Becky and scratched my car. Cool, now you can play your games in peace.
Minion of Kryo That would make a cool name for a monster type in the game!
Rather than critical hits doing HP, I think they should disable a specific module or reduce movement.
Yea, I just want to be careful never to introduce any personal biases into the games. At the end of the day, they're games which means fun should be the primray goal. Your politics aren't quite mine, but what do I care? If I didn't want flavour, I'd eat white rice every meal and never try anything new. A game with a consistent, well-expressed phi
For a GalCiv III, it would be nice to expand the political factions further so that there was actaully internal competition in keeping your empire under your control. Now how coool - and genuinely innovative - would that be? Sid Meir had no problem putting his political ideas into his games, and neither should you. Politics should be WAY
You might find your vidcard holds you back a bit, and you definitely want more RAM (It's not 1999 any more...)
The opponents in GalCiv, while not perfect representations of idealized human opponents, I think are more satisfying that the typical person you'd find on-line. Say what you will about the Drengin, they've never called me a "FAG! LOL!"
I don't make ships until necassary for war, then I will choose what weapon is the most effective. So just keep a small army but when it is time for war, boost production in military, redesign as necessary and go to war. When war is over, sell what you don't need (like level 1 ships or damaged ships) and keep high level ships around. Even though you will not be the stronges
