Great ideas. I would never have thought of the empty hulls, though I had only three colonies and the pirates were sitting right there waiting for anything I could send up. The bribery would have been an excellent move. I've been surprised at how cheaply other civs can be bought. I had managed to get a couple of constructors over to a SB and give it battle stations 1, hoping to at least knock out a couple of pirates ships, but even with 45 hp and some attack and defense, they cooke

One thing I have to say about GC2 is it's unpredictable. This game (on the "challenging" level) pirates appear at the beginning of the game with 28HP ships in fleets - destroying everybody's fleet EXCEPT that of the Altarians. Since it takes a zillion rp to get to hulls and weapons and defenses that can take on those pirates, and they carefully went after any ship I built, my starports were useless. Since it was early game, nobody could take them on and needless to say, no trading by

Thanks for the tips. I've also considered luring it (as Gaunathor suggested) away from the Drengin home planet then taking that home planet by invasion before the PCR can get back to defend it. Right now I have several troop ships near the home planet but out of sight of the PCR. Wish me luck! Since it takes as much distance for the PCR to get to a single ship of mine as a fleet, I'm going to bring in several single ships widely spaced to keep the PCR running from place to pla

So I'm on a roll, ahead of the game having made alliances, happy population, then along comes the magical gift of the PC Ranger...to the Drengin and without taking even one hit point, it proceeds to knock out just about every ship I have. I'm able to get every civ in the game at war with the Drengin but still the Ranger is toasting everything including my heavily fortified SB's. The only positive thing is I am able to sneak a fleet around the back door and wipe out

When I look at the price I will be charged to purchase an improvement or a ship outright (not on credit), I notice the price varies not only planet to planet but even over time on the same planet. It's not unusual to get a ship for free (0 bc), which is clearly much less than the cost of the ship shown in the shipbuilder. I understand the price going up with successive purchases on the same planet, but in my few games so far the price seems almost random. What's the formula behind it?

STRANGENESS #1: In ToA I'm at war with the Dregnin and have been for some time, taking their planets one by one. I go into Iconian territory where the Dregs have a starbase and attack it. A window pops up warning me that by attacking the starbase I will start a war with the Dregs!!! As gramps used to say, WTF? STRANGENESS #2: Since I want to wipe out that Dreg SB and since I'm already at war with them, I go ahead and attack. Then a window

Altern - I'm attempting to run your APT mod, but after following the instructions you provide, placing the (unzipped) APT12 folder in the MOD folder, the game doesn't see it, though the pathname for "current mods directory" in the game matches where APT12 is located. I first removed customizations as directed. When I go to the OPTIONS screen, I tick "use mods" and then the CHANGE button, but nothing appears in the box for me to select. BTW, also in the MODS folder (alo

MabusAltern - I found the page on your site that lists the two other mods that seem to make up, along with yours, the trio of most recent efforts. Thanks to the links you provide, I've downloaded all of them and will give them a try. Though I have only played a few games - I'm finding that at normal difficulty the vanilla game is easier than it should be. All I have to do is inspect the enemy weaponry by examining their ships in orbit around their planets, then tailor-make my

This discussion of mods has me salivating. From what I read, it appears the vanilla game has serious problems with the techs. As a newcomer, it's great to have the knowledge base that all of you have built and the work you've done to make the game better. I'm interested in a mod that will fix the problems of the basic game. I've looked at the Metaverse mod section and am bewildered because there are so many mods, many quite old. Where should I go to find the mo

Is there a place where industrial production is broken down by source? I ask because I see that the mining bases (not mining starbases, but the bases built by the mining ships) feed industrial points to planets, but I can't find a place where I can see how that adds up with the planetary industrial production. When I view the planet screen, industrial production is calculated, so one should subtract whatever factories are producing on that planet and what is left over is coming fr

If other Steam users are reading who want Galactopedia to run - start Galactopedia up and when it asks for a manual path, give it this one... C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition\MetaverseData

I tried downloading the Galactopedia, but it would not recognize my Steam-installed GC2. It tells me it cannot find necessary files. Problem solved - see next post.

I've found in playing GC2 that managing the tech tree is a problem. One reason is it is soooo big that one can't see a major portion of it at one time without everything being too small to read. Another issue is the detailed info for each tech cannot be seen without selecting the tech and reading the info for only one tech at a time. When I want to know about a tech that I haven't attained, I have to select it, losing my current place on the tech tree to go look. I

I'm starting a new game where Earth is located only 12 parsecs from the edge of the map. Along the edge not far from Earth are two resources that I want to grab with Starbases. I have sent my constructors there but for some reason they are not allowed to go to these resources on the edge. I can fly to the parsecs around the resources including empty parsecs on the edge but it's impossible to land on the resources and construct. A bug?

I'm confused about the meaning of SB levels. At first I thought it would be the number of modules that would increase the function of the base, for example if a mining SB had two modules that increased mining that would raise the level. But, by looking at the equipment on my SB's I see this isn't true. I have SB's that are heavily armed and defended yet they are still level 0. I notice there is an experience category and that seems to climb with combat...so level is ad

I'm on my second game and wondering about invasions. As I understand it, in order to take over another inhabited planet from another civ, I need - the planetary invasion tech - a transport ship (tech required?) - soldiers to fill the ship (tech?) - the ability to wipe out any orbiting defense force at the target planet Once I have all of the above, can the defending planet keep me from taking over by, say, having a defense force on the planet or som

I've just started playing the game, but as a long time Sid Meier Civ player, I was happy to see the sliders disappear in the move from Civ IV to V. In that case, now research goes directly to techs, food goes to population increase, coins go to expenses. It's straightforward and works well with the selection of what one builds in each city determining the weight one puts on what gets done in that city. I would highly recommend GC go the same route as it removes a source

I bought on Steam and was provided with a key by Steam when the installation was complete. It prompted me that the key might be needed when the game was started. So I copied it to the clipboard to have it ready if needed. I started the game and there was no request for the key. Everything went smoothly. The next time I started the game, Steam again provided the key. There was a checkbox "don't show me this again". Since everything was working fine, I clicked on that checkbox and h

So it's the components - for weapons, capacity and speed - that I want to go after and larger sized hulls to get on everything I want. Planetary Invasion takes quite a bit of research, I notice. In this game, I've gone with Starbase enhancement and the resulting defense and attack capabilities have made my SB's indestructible, but pirates took a planet of mine and without invasion ability, I guess influence is all that can get it back. As you mention - the

Well, I almost won my first game, surviving until there were just two of us. It was at beginner level but considering I was at zero ship production for half the game, I did ok! [e digicons][/e] Now, the confusing point in my second game is the shipbuilder. 1)At the top of the shipbuilder screen is a bar that fills as you select items you want to install. It must be the cost, but there is a faint fill and a solid fill that I don't get. 2) it s
