First, I think this is a very good question, and one I'd like a more comprehensive answer on. Second, simply looking in the Task Manager in an NT kernel'd Windows OS (NT/2K/XP) isn't quite enough to determine resource usage. Memory isn't the only resource these GUI tools use. GDI resources are heavily hit I'm sure. At the very least, when viewing the memory usage in the Task Manager, click View-Select Columns, and check the "Virtual Memory Size" checkbox.
