Yeah, go into the Sandbox mode first before trying campaign. It's much more rewarding. I tried campaign when I first started and felt like plunging myself through the window in frustration because of those bleedin' Dreadlords. If you don't know how to deal with them they will bitchslap you everywhere.

I personally prefer Tolemekian's Mod, it preserves much of the original game but whips the AI into shape somewhat. I'd recommend setting the Ai difficulty to Tough to start with, this means the AI has full use of it's resources without being given economic bonuses over the player. A good way to learn the ropes.
I'll second Gaunathor . Personally I like the early game colony rush & infrastructure development however it sounds to me like you haven't got the patience to wait for things to heat up. So simply crank up the research rate in the pre-game settings to it's fastest setting. You'll be knee deep in a world of pain before you know it.
I've been trying to create my own race and can't get the game to switch between the two imgaes for their respective screens. I have 2 images in my \GC2TwilightArnor\Gfx\Portraits folder: one is a portrait (256 by 256, "Rake.png") you see when choosing a race and the other is a wider picture (430 by 280, "RakeWide.png") for the diplomacy screen. I just can't get the game to switch between the two for their respective screens. Can someone tell me what to type in the race config? </p
Sorry to hear that mate, I really appreciate the time you've been putting in to try and fix the AI in this game. It makes it so much more playable.
Could you perhaps include a brief description about how to install this mod for the ignorants such as myself...? I'd love to try this out.
That's perfectly normal I think, it happens in my games and it happens in every Let's Play video I've ever watched. I think it represents the amount of money you have in your treasury in relation to the absolute maximum you can offer in trade.
Banned for mentioning the A word.
Hey people. [e digicons]^_^[/e] Recently bought GalCiv2 Ultimate and I was wondering what music do you listen to while playing GC2? I like something slow-paced and relatively calming, Enya's my favourite, but when war breaks out I prefer something more aggressive; I was handbagging with the Drengin the other day and had Rage Against the Machine blasting, they didn't last very long! Ha! So, like the title says, what's your favourite GalCiv
