Yes, I do. For the early designs where you have no options anyway. A no engine design with the max guns is fine for system defense. Once I start planing offense, I design ships myself. Speed for interceptors and commerce raiders, heavy defenses and Fleet Modules for the command carriers, etcetera.

Yes. At least for an early war, as an Iconian, you can forego defense and concentrate on your hull modules instead. (Got caught out by the neighbors and so had to research better weapons instead of armor. Since I had many of the HP upgrades, I just soaked the damage and outlasted them instead. Once I got armor as well, my Iconians just crushed them.)

It's funny, the OP mentions this resolution, which in 40+ games I've never seen, and as soon as he does, it show up in my current game. It's also like the alighnment change event: hadn't seen it before and now it is coming up in back to back games for me.

The same thing has happened to me, and I resorted to war as well. I guess it is part of the random events, but I don't know. Still, it doesn't always happen since I did win the last two games through influence. Sometime you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.

I like the Altarians, they gain techs fast. However, their military bonuses are usually in defense, not offense. While the Iconians soak the damage with their unusually tough ships, the Altarians avoid getting hit. Still, if your race is higher tech than the enemy, it doesn't matter if you have special weapons or not. Oh, when playing with the Altarian tech tree, who have to choose good: nearly all their race-specific perks are good-only

When you say strongest ships, do you mean offense, defense, or durability (hit points)? The Iconians have a number of unique techs that give them the highest HP ships and high repair rates, but their weapon techs are weak. Generally, if an Iconian ship isn't killed outright, it will be back with the self-regeneration techs. The Drengin get a bonus in research weapons techs, and if they choose Evil with

Thanks for the answer: I knew it would be messy, but I didn't expect it to be this messy! As regards Influence starbases, it appears Influence is recalculated every time a new module is added. In my current game, I'm having an influence war with the Iconians and the Korx are the victims. The I-base next to Korx at first did not have noticable effect, but once I added the +60 modules suddenly the border

Just a few Influence-related questions. 1. In the manual, we are told what things effect influence, but not exactly how, or in what proportion. Has anyone found actual formulas for this, and if so, what are they? 2. What is more important in influence generation, having a large population on a planet, or a small population with lots of Cultural Exchange Centers (CEC hereafter)? (Generally, I'd want a 14 pop planet deep in foreign territory, just so it has the

Also being intrigued by the challenge, I took it up. I had played Iconians before, but only twice, and that was some time ago and I couldn't really remember how they worked. After playing them again, I am beginning to think they are not meant for a fast start, but are meant to claw their way from behind, which makes for a slow game. [Won by Tech victory at 7 years, 2 m, 4 wks at Tough.] My settings were slightly different than the OP's. Tough, Huge M

Thank you qrtxian , and also to you Noctilucus, for your answers. [quote who="qrtxian" reply="4" id="2788842"]A very high PQ planet is the only place to really consider trying to get a large population for economic purposes (for me, anyway) but I can't

[quote who="DamienShade" reply="3" id="2179877"] quoting post 4. Do I need to hook up my star bases? Right now, only the Ascension SB is actually producing. Not sure what status screen it is, but it claims I don't have any SB bonuses. You may have figured this out by now, but you need to send more Construction ships to the starbases to upgrade them with bonus modules. The Ascension starbase has no upgrades so that's why only one ship is enoug
