In the end I had to power off the computer without shutting down. This may seem obvious but... Have you tried custom designing colony ships? Even adding +1 speed helps tremendously in the colony rush. Also, try spending money on espionage. Even 10 to 20bc per week is enough to get some useful info by turn 20. Finally, trade can be used to ensure you're neighbours don't declare war on you too soon. Hope this helps, good luck.
