Really depends on the game and what race I am playing. If I am going heavy research from the get go playing as most any race I will wait for someone to attack me then go full out ship building and steam roll them with my superior tech in a month or two. If I am playing as the Altarians I like to just smash minor civs until someone attacks me and then of course half the galaxy turns on them and they are free food for me. Played again for about 3 hours and the explosion graphic disapeared (white box instead of a kaboom). I tried to save and got a memory error. You are going to need 3d studio max or some similar program to make from scratch a 3d model. You should really go to I-mod or one of the other listed sites, and read all the stickies on this site because there are other programs you can use to make 3d models (some free) and none of them are pick up and use software. You will want to read and do some tutorials to start off with or do what I do and just wait for/beg someone else to make the models you want.

Too many points to really address but I have made the strongest sets of custom races I can think of and on a gig map on painful I set it to random opponents. I try to make a new custom race every game and end up playing against the races I dominated with the games before. It has been very interesting and challenging to do.
